Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos for Cinco de Mayo

May 4, 2008 by Susanne

herradura shrimp tacos

On May 5th in the United States, we celebrate Mexican culture and ancestry - similiar to what we do for Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day, German heritage with Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year for Chinese ancestry. The holiday is actually not the “Mexico’s Independance Day” (which is September 16). Cinco de Mayo commemorates one of the most significant victories for the Mexican militia over the French army in 1862 and now serves as a reason to celebrate every aspect of the Mexican culture.

Regardless of your ethnic origin, you can still enjoy Cinco de Mayo, and what better way than to by creating your own Mexican fiesta complete with delicious Shrimp Tacos.

The recipe below is by Sam “The Cooking Guy”: Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos, and is an absolute favorite of ours. Savory and festive, this recipe blends the traditional Mexican flavors with a new twist - making them the ultimate addition to an authentic Cinco de Mayo menu. And who said, that you can only enjoy a mexican menu for Cinco de Mayo anyway? Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos is perfect for any gathering of friends, and is best enjoy with Margeritas. We prefer using Wild Georgia Shrimp for this recipe!

The First Friday Artwalk is always a lively and colorful street festival that you need to visit if you happen to be in the area. Participating galleries in downtown host an open house offering visitors a chance to look at the latest art while enjoying wine and hors d’oeuvres. Local artists are often in attendance to talk to visitors, and live music is performed around town. First Friday Artwalk takes place on Friday May 2, 5:00 pm - 21.00 pm.

Gamble Rogers Festival returns, this time the popular music festival takes place at St Johns county Fairgrounds on May 2,3,4. Six stages and a variety of music from local to national. Call 904-826-3297 or visit www.gamblefest.com

You’re always surrounded by history in St. Augustine, and on Saturday May 3rd you also have the chance to experience history up close. Come see muskets and cannons fired by re-enactors at Fort Matanzas. Take the ferry out to Rattlesnake island for a real life weapons firing demonstration. It’s sure to be a hit with the whole family. The historic weapons firing demonstration happens at 10.30 am and 3.30 pm. For more information about the fort and the event, please call 904.471.0116

This Spring at the Cummer Art & Gardens - Jacksonville, Florida

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens has two unique exhibits to explore this spring, as well as gardens in full bloom along the St. Johns River.  The Cummer presents Ernest Hemingway and Walker Evans: Three Weeks in Cuba, 1933, through June 1.   This exhibition displays 37 vintage photographic prints by Walker Evans and seven prints copied by Evans, that were found among Ernest Hemingway’s possessions after his death, along with notes, and personal artifacts.  This set of Evans prints that Hemingway acquired in 1933 and stored away for years has never been exhibited until recently.

Also on display starting July 23, Scalpel to Sketch: the science and beauty of medical illustration at Mayo Clinic features works from Mayo Clinic’s world-class collection of medical illustration.  This is one of largest collections of its kind in the world and is rarely exhibited to the public.  On display will be medical art rendered in various media such as carbon dust, pen & ink, watercolor, airbrush and digital media. Visitors explore interpretations of the human form, animated voyages inside the human body, studies of the brain to molecules and gene clusters, skeletons, and a rare look at the unique anatomy of conjoined twins.  Call (904) 356-6857 or visit www.cummer.org.

Second Location Opens Where Chocolates are Created!

claudePonte Vedra, Florida (February 2008) Claude’s Chocolate has their new chocolate room ready for tasting, shopping and meeting Claude himself. Claude and Nicole Franques are filling a niche in Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine that is innovative while pioneering a true European-style of luxurious romantic chocolate. There are many reasons to celebrate this opening, most notably by winning the Editor’s Choice Award from Water’s Edge Magazine (August 2007) for ‘best of the best’ chocolates!

The allure of America enticed Claude Franques to leave Toulouse, France for New York City in the 1970’s and become one of America’s fine French chefs. He and his wife Nicole spent nearly 20 years continuing the legacy of Rene Pujol Restaurant in Manhattan, until St. Augustine’s charm and European style beckoned them to stay; here they have created their innovative culinary adventure…Claude’s Chocolate.
