On the other hand, Louis Armstrong who really was the king of Jazz once said “If you have to ask what jazz is, you’ll never know.”
But it’s evident jazz has strong ties to the South and maybe that’s the reason why we have several music events in our area this fall celebrating jazz music.

Labor Day is always a big deal on the coast of Georgia with a variety of annual festivals and events. It’ll be hard to choose, but here’s a quick rundown to help you with you plan your weekend getaway trip.

Savannah Craft Brew Fest

Let’s start in Savannah, Georgia. Savannah is always a beautiful city to visit, especially in the warmer season. You can take a nice walk down to Riverstreet. One of our favorite places to visit for a drink, something to eat or just to people watch is the City Market.

But if you visit Savannah during Labor Day weekend, the place to be is Savannah Craft Brew Fest. This event start already on September 4 with the grande tasting event on Saturday September 5.

For more information visit our special page about Savannah Craft Brew Fest.

Tybee Island Beach Bash

About a 20 minute drive from Savannah, you’ll find Tybee Island, often referred to as Savannah’s own beach. If you’re looking to spend your Labor Day weekend on the beach – why not head out to Tybee Island. The island has plenty of nice restaurants and bars, quaint shops and on Saturday September 5, 2010, Tybee celebrates the weekend with a big bash. It’s the Tybee Island Labor Day Beach Bash – complete with fireworks.

Read more here – Tybee Island Labor Day Beach Bash

In Camden County further south, Labor Day weekend is celebrated every year with a festival. It’s the annual Kingsland Catfish Festival. This festival of course serves southern fried catfish – but besides food, the festival comes with vendors, arts & crafts, live music and a parade.

I never get tired of visiting Savannah with its beautiful squares and beautiful architecture. In the summer, downtown is usually filled with people and there’s a lot going on. There are so many different places to sit down, have a bite to eat or a drink. With the beginning of a new month comes another “week of firsts” – and in Savannah there are even two special events.

It’s always a pleasure to visit the riverfront in downtown Savannah, especially in the summer. Lot’s of people, and lots of fun. To finish off a day of sightseeing head to the riverfront for First Friday Fireworks on August 6, 2010 at 9:30 pm. Then on Saturday August 7, it’s the First Saturday on the river, with lots of events, arts & crafts and fun for the whole family.

St. Simons is also busy in the summer. In the evenings, lots of people walk down to the pier to watch the sunset or the fishermen. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a dolphin or two.

The Jazz in the park at the lawn of St. Simons Lighthouse has become a favorite summer event in the Golden Isles area. This month the concert takes place on Sunday, August 22 when Gwen Hughes and the Retro Jazz Cats are performing. Read more about the event on our page for Jazz in the Park

To me nothing says summer more than beach music. You can’t beat the combination of beach music and bbq, and this is especially attractive when the event in question takes place on beautiful Jekyll Island, Georgia. This year the festival is held in Great Dunes Park for the first time. Everyone’s favorite beach music band “The Swingin’ Medallions” are coming again. The Beach Music Festival and BBQ Bash takes place August 20 – 21, 2010.

Check out our video from the event on the special page for Beach Music Festival and BBQ Bash on Jekyll Island.

Old Fort Jackson Auction invites you to join for a special Low Country Boil and Auction on August 28, 2010. This is an annual fundraiser for Old Fort Jackson, a National Historic Landmark site in Savannah, Georgia.
The fundraiser takes place at Old Fort Jackson on Saturday, August 28, 2010 6:00pm There will be a silent auction, children’s activities, cannon firings, and live music, and lots of fun for the whole family. Free admission. Food and concessions available for purchase. For more information contact Old Fort Jackson directly at 912.232.3945

Another fun event coming on August 21, 2010 is the Songwriters Showcase in St. Marys, Georgia. It’s the first year for the event, but if you enjoy live music, it might be something for you. You can read more about the event on our sister site Camden Happening. Here is the link to the post about the Songwriters Showcase in St Marys, Georgia Also in St. Marys in August, there’s Starry Nights.
Alfred Hitchcock is the master of suspense. Now you have an opportunity to see on of Hitchcock’s most acclaimed but rarely screened classics. The classic Strangers on a Train from 1951 is screening at the Historic Ritz Theatre in Downtown Brunswick on Thursday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m.

The screenplay was adapted by acclaimed mystery writer Raymond Chandler from the novel by famous author Patricia Highsmith. Many of Patricia Highsmith’s books have been adapted for the silver screen, including The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) starring Matt Damon and Jude Law.

The film features Farley Granger, who also starred in Hitchcock’s Rope a few years earlier, as a famous tennis pro who unwittingly becomes ensnared in a malicious plot concocted by the wealthy, decadent Bruno. played by Robert Walker. Alfred Hitchcock’s own daughter, Patricia, also has a supporting role in the movie.

This film is the fourth in the Summer Classic Movies at the Ritz series presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association (GIAHA).

Every week of the Summer Classic Movies series features a selection of fun and rare short subjects beginning at 6:30 p.m. This week’s screening includes a short film about train travel in the 1950s (appropriately enough) and a classic cartoon about a mischievous boy on a runaway train saved by his faithful dog. There is also free popcorn (first come, first served), as well as door-prize drawings and special offers from local merchants.

Admission to Strangers on a Train is $5. Doors open at 5:00. Ticket holders can show their tickets at Arte Pizza, a couple of doors down from the Ritz on Newcastle St., and get 10% off their meal before the show.

The series continues the remaining Thursday evening in July with the landmark 1968 film Bonnie and Clyde (July 29). The grand finale of the season will be a special matinee of Gone with the Wind on Sunday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m. Audiences can purchase tickets at the door to see just the movie and shorts for $5. Advance tickets are also on sale for $12, which entitles the ticket holder to admission plus a delicious intermission Silver Screen Snack catered by Southern Soul Barbeque: a pulled pork slider and two sides that you can take back into the theater and enjoy during the second half of the show. Advance tickets can be ordered on line at goldenislesarts.org; in person at the Ritz, 1530 Newcastle St., Downtown; or by phone(912-262-6934).

2010 SCAD fashion grad and Savannah resident April Johnston is to be a competitor in upcoming season of “Project Runway”.

At 21 years old, April will be the youngest of the 17 contestants, the largest number of designers in the show’s history. And the Savannah resident is the only contestant from the South.

“Everybody at SCAD is thrilled for April. We’ll all be glued to our sets,” says School of Fashion Dean Michael Fink. “If her provocative and powerful senior collection is any indication, we’re confident she’ll create some exciting and intriguing clothes.”

April’s senior collection was inspired by deconstructed halls, old asylums and abandoned morgues. Her SCAD Style Lab mentor, Zac Posen, guided her through the creation of her collection. The result was a theme of dark beauty—black and grey designs whose beauty was found in the detailed textures.

“Project Runway” premieres on Lifetime Network Thursday, July 29 at 9 p.m. EST.

The McIntosh County Shouters are making a special appearance on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at Second African Baptist Church, 123 Houston Street in Savannah.

The McIntosh County Shouters have been bringing folks to their feet with their unique “shouting” performance for over 30 years. A mesmerizing blend of circling dance movements, call-and-response singing and percussive handclaps, modern “shouting” derives from the communication used by African slaves working in rice fields in the 18th- and 19th centuries. It is thought to be one of the oldest surviving forms of African American cultural and spiritual expression, and its influences can be heard in later musical genres including jubilee, gospel, and even jazz.

The ring shout tradition was for the most part forgotten by the world until it was discovered that a small community had been passing down this joyful practice for generations. The group began performing as the McIntosh County Ring Shouters in 1980 and has held audiences spellbound ever since. Unchanged for hundreds of years, today’s ring shout both pays homage to the community’s ancestors and contributes to a greater understanding of early African American culture.

The Shouters have been featured in a Georgia Public Broadcasting documentary, performed at Lincoln Center in New York City, and are a recipient of the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Cary Grant is easily the most requested and best-loved star of any of the movies we’ve shown in the summer classic series, so we’re happy to present another of his great roles,” notes GIAHA’s Rob Nixon. “And it’s especially wonderful to see him with one of his best on-screen partners, Katharine Hepburn. This was the fourth and final time they appeared together, and their romantic chemistry and comic sparring is a joy to watch.”

Nixon adds that this was perhaps the most important picture in Hepburn’s nearly seven-decade career. A couple of years prior to this, she was one of several actresses declared “box office poison” by a motion picture trade magazine. Many thought her career was finished, but with her characteristically steely Yankee determination, she returned to her first love, theater, appearing in the stage version of The Philadelphia Story to sold-out audiences. When MGM went to buy the film rights to the Broadway hit with the intention of producing it for one of their big stars, they found that Hepburn owned the property—the only way they could bring it to the screen was with her in it! The result was a triumph all around, not only restoring Hepburn’s film career but creating a new image that would shape the rest of her performances for the next 50+ years.

It was also an important role for James Stewart. The young star had broken through to major success the year before with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, earning him the first of five Oscar nominations. Stewart didn’t win then, but he did get the award a year later for The Philadelphia Story, holding his own with Grant and Hepburn as a “man of the people” writer who learns a few things about how the other half lives.

The movie starts at 7:00 p.m., but audiences who arrive at least a half hour early will also be treated to entertaining short subjects, including cartoons, coming attractions, and newsreels, just like the old-time movie experience. And there will be free popcorn (first come, first served) generously provided by Angie Aimar and James Laurens of Coldwell Banker Platinum Partners. Each night of the film series also features door-prize drawings and special offers from local merchants.

Admission to The Philadelphia Story, and to every film in the series, is only $5 for all ages. The first five films of the series are screened on Thursday nights in July at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:00, leaving ample time to buy a ticket and take advantage of the many dining opportunities in Downtown Brunswick before the show.

The series concludes with a special matinee showing of Gone with the Wind on Sunday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m.

Advance tickets can be ordered on line at goldenislesarts.org; in person at the Ritz, 1530 Newcastle St., Downtown; or by phone with credit card (262-6934).

On Sunday June 27th, 2010, it’s time again for Jazz in the Park at St. Simons Island. The event takes place outside the St Simons Island Lighthouse and is scheduled at high tide to take advantage of the breeze from the ocean. And this weekend, I think we will need all the breeze we can get.

But don’t let the heat keep you indoors. Instead, take advantage of the nice summer weather and spend an evening outside under the stars and enjoy a great jazz performance.

This Sunday the Savannah Stompers are performing.

The SCAD Museum of Art announces its latest exhibition, “Fashion in Focus: Photos and Evening Wear from the SCAD Museum of Art Collection,” ongoing now through Sept. 30, 227 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

This exhibition of more than 30 objects highlights recent couture gifts to the SCAD Museum of Art including exquisite evening dresses by contemporary designers Ralph Rucci, Oscar de la Renta for Balmain, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, Isabel Toledo, Valentino, and Lars Nilsson for Bill Blass. The aesthetic ranges from the sumptuous splendor of an aubergine opera coat and the charm of an ice cream pink ball gown to the clean simple lines of a little black dress or the austere grace of silver and ivory evening dresses.

Among the fashion photographs on view are images from the past few decades by noted photographers Sir Cecil Beaton, Horst P. Horst, Karl Lagerfeld, David Bailey, Arthur Elgort, Herb Ritts and others, in images that graced the pages of Vogue or other fashion journals and featured the top models of the time.

As a teaching museum, the SCAD Museum of Art supports the academic and creative programs at SCAD by providing students with direct encounters with works by major artists while enriching the artistic, educational and cultural offerings available to the university and wider communities. The museum is a cultural gem that adds to Savannah’s reputation as an ideal location for visitors and those interested in the arts and architecture.

For more information about the exhibition and to arrange group tours, call 912.525.7191, or visit www.scad.edu/scadmuseum. Museum hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

THE COUNCIL OF DADS is the book Bruce Feiler never expected to write. For years, he has captivated readers with his smart, witty, insightful storytelling, which chronicles his heart-stopping adventures around the world in such bestsellers as Walking the Bible, Abraham, and America’s Prophet.

But in 2008, Feiler, the father of two young girls, learned he had a life-threatening tumor in his left femur. Confronting the possibility that he may not be around to help his daughters grow up, he reached out to six men from all passages in his life and asked them to be present through the passages in his daughters’ lives. And he called this group of men “The Council of Dads.”

“I believe my daughters will have plenty of opportunities,” he wrote to these men. “They’ll have loving families. They’ll have welcoming homes. They’ll have each other. But they may not have me. They may not have their dad. Will you help be their dad?”
On May 12, one of the Council of Dads, Dr. Ben Edwards will be in attendance at Trinity United Methodist Church for a heartwarming introduction of Mr. Feiler.

THE COUNCIL OF DADS is the uplifting story of what happened next. Feiler introduces us to the extraordinary, far-flung men in his Council and captures the life lesson he wants each of them to convey to his daughters—how to see, how to travel, how to question, how to dream. And he captures in beautiful, wrenching prose the harrowing journey of his “Lost Year” fighting cancer and trying to salvage his leg. With unflinching candor, Feiler details not only the physical effects of the disease and treatment, but also the toll it took on his family. But along the way, the wisdom and strength he gathers from his Council, coupled with the beauty and humor he discovers in his own family, transforms his “Lost Year” into a “Jubilee Year” of reconnection and renewal. The result is an extraordinary tribute to friendship, and a sage collection of advice for how to cultivate our dreams.

THE COUNCIL OF DADS is a deeply hopeful book, a story of enduring love between a husband and wife and between a father and his daughters. But most of all it’s a celebration of friendship and a testament to the profound power of human connections.

BRUCE FEILER is the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, including Walking the Bible, Abraham and America’s Prophet. He has traveled to more than sixty countries on five continents and is the writer-presenter of the PBS miniseries, Walking the Bible. With his books, Bruce Feiler has moved readers to take a fresh look at history and far-flung places of the world. Now, with THE COUNCIL OF DADS, Feiler inspires us to cultivate a deeper appreciation of the people closest to us and revitalize the most intimate bonds in our lives. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Linda Rottenberg, and their twin daughters, Tybee and Eden.

Tybee Island Beach Bum parade is not your ordinary parade. This one is unique and special. The parade itself really understands how to celebrate the beginning of summer and is something something locals and maybe especially the younger crowd long for every year. Why? It’s simple. It’s all about fun and play.

Tybee Island Beach Bum parades is like most others consisting of floats pulled behind cars and trucks. The difference is that on Tybee this is a playful water-play event for all ages between floats and spectators lined up along Butler Avenue. Spectators arm themselves with bucket, squirt guns and other water spraying weapons. This is your chance to get wet before you even set foot on the beach!

Tybee Island is located just outside Savannah, Georgia. The parade takes place on May 21, 2010 and starts at 6 p.m.

The award was renamed to include Talley’s name and has been presented successively to fashion legends Oscar de la Renta, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, Tom Ford, Vera Wang, Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, and most recently Isabel and Ruben Toledo. In 2004, Zac Posen was honored with the André Leon Talley New Look Award. Talley is a member of the SCAD Board of Trustees.

Hailing from Brussels, Belgium, von Furstenberg first arrived in the fashion world in 1972 with her iconic wrap dress, the seed of what is today a full fashion house. By 1976, von Furstenberg had sold millions of her dresses, coming to symbolize female power and freedom to an entire generation. In 1997, after a hiatus from fashion, she reemerged on the New York fashion scene with the re-launch of the dress that started it all and began transforming her company into the global luxury lifestyle brand it is today. The impact of this garment to women and the fashion industry is so profound that it is now part of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian.
In 2004, she was presented with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from SCAD. In 2005, von Furstenberg was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) for her impact on fashion, and one year later, was elected president of the CFDA, an office she continues to hold today.

Headquartered in New York City, there are currently 33 freestanding DVF boutiques worldwide and DVF collections are also sold in select retail specialty stores in more than 71 countries. As a longtime resident of New York’s Meatpacking District, von Furstenberg is a vocal member of the local community. She opens up her studio on a regular basis to host cultural events and is actively involved in the campaign to save and redevelop the historical High Line railway. A firm believer in the power of women, she sits on the board of Vital Voices, a women’s leadership organization that empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the world.

110 undergraduate and graduate students are currently vying for one of 30 prestigious slots in the SCAD Fashion Show, which has become one of the top student fashion shows in the country. Selected by a jury process, the students’ work is critiqued every step of the way, from sketches to garments, by some of the top professionals in the fashion industry.

SCAD has the largest and most comprehensive School of Fashion in the world, and offers more degree programs and specializations in fashion and accessory design than any other art and design university. Encompassing fashion design, accessory design, fashion marketing and management, luxury and fashion management, and menswear, the SCAD School of Fashion prepares students for the practical and professional needs required in today’s global fashion industry through innovative design combined with state-of-the art technology, anchored in creative thinking.

Complementing classroom instruction, the SCAD Style Lab mentorship program in the School of Fashion affords students a realistic glimpse of working industry standards, offering direction and inspiration for a select group of students’ senior collections through one-on-one critiques and guidance from concept through production. Mentors have included Brian Wolk and Claude Morais of Ruffian, Yigal Azrouël, Lars Nilsson, Zac Posen, Catherine Malandrino, Bryan Bradley and Angel Sanchez.

Tickets for the 2010 SCAD Fashion Show will be available beginning April 30 for the SCAD community and May 3 for the general public at the SCAD box office, 216 E. Broughton St., online at www.scadboxoffice.com or can charged by phone at 912.525.5050. A matinee at 4 p.m. will precede the 8 p.m. gala featuring von Furstenberg. Matinee tickets are $20 each or $10 with a SCAD ID. Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $50 each or $25 with a SCAD ID. All tickets are limited to two per person for both shows.

The annual Sidewalk Arts Festival takes place on April 24, 2010 from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. This popular festival draws thousands of visitors to Forsyth Park to view a chalk drawing competition on the sidewalks in the park. The talented students and alumni from SCAD, the college of Art and Design, come out to compete and you can spend a day in the park watching art being created right in front of you.

First, second- and third-place monetary prizes are awarded in three categories: students, alumni and prospective students. This year marks the return of a perennial award sponsor, Gray’s Reef, whose competition theme for student-specific awards is “Best Underwater Environment.” Two new partners are also involved: American Greetings will sponsor a flora and fauna competition theme, and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s award theme is “Where the Spirit Meets the Art.” Prospective student award categories range from “Best Copy of a Famous Work” to “Most Whimsical.”
