The city of Savannah is known for its rich history and for its many festival. This time of year festival season is in full swing. Savannah hosts the largest St. Patrick’s Day party in the South over several days, with a St Patrick’s Day parade, green fountain and lots of beer on this Irish party day. This is one of the most popular events in Savannah, it is said that 400,000 people will show up to celebrate Irish heritage.

Go Green!

Start your celebration early and head to Forsyth Park at lunchtime on Friday March 12, 2010. Watch the water turn green at noon.
This event is sure to be a hit with the younger crowd. With the nice, warm weather we’re having, it might be a perfect time for a picnic in the park.

Tara Feis, an Irish Festival
Then on Saturday, we’ll go all out with a genuine Irish Festival, Tara Feis taking place on Saturday March 13. This is a festival celebrating Irish culture with lots of fun for the whole family from food, to music and dance and much more. The festival is held in Emmet Park. The event is free and open to the public, this year’s event features the Cathie Ryan Band. Tara Feis festival takes place in Emmet Park from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. For more information call 912.651.6417 or http://www.savannahga.gov/arts.

Then there is of course the River Street celebration in the historic downtown district on March 16-17, 2010. This is the main waterfront location for all Paddy Day partygoers coming to town.

The 2010 St. Patrick’s Festival on Historic River Street takes place along the waterfront, includes the following area: River Street from East Broad Street to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Festivities in this area include games, food, beverages, and live entertainment. The event itself is free, but partygoers must purchase a wristband ($5) to consume alcoholic beverages on the plaza and inside River Street businesses on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wristbands will be sold at kiosks on the plaza, and at businesses on River Street. Already on Tuesday, the party starts with the I-95 Battle of the Bands.

St Patrick’s Day Parade
Don’t miss the parade itself. This year it’s the 186th time for the St. Patrick’s Day parade, so this is one of the oldest in the United States. The parade features bands and marching groups from across the country. Savannah St Patrick’s Day parade starts at 10:15 a.m. (Here is the map of the parade route)

When I was reading my twitter stream today, @dizzygirl pointed out a story about the state bird that I found interesting.

The state bird in Georgia is the brown thrasher. But now, there is a movement trying to change the state bird from the Brown Thrasher to the chicken.

Their argument – the chicken makes more of an economic impact.
Here are a few of the interesting facts from the website:

Georgia broiler production accounts for 16% of the nation’s total.

By the beginning of World War II, chickens had replaced cotton as Georgia’s leading agricultural moneymaker.

More than 47,000 Georgians are employed by the poultry industry directly.

Take a look at the video below – and make sure to post your comments below – I’m interested to hear what you think!

It makes you wonder about the other state birds. Do they contribute to the economy? And what about the plants? What do they do?

The Skidaway Island Antiques Show and Sale has raised $572,000 for Savannah’s neediest children over the past 11 years. More than 1500 people attend the show each year. Two things makes The Skidaway Island Antique Show and Sales so popular, first and foremost the amazing antiques, secondly, the delicious lunches prepared by the parishioners of St. Peter’s Church.

This year’s show will begin with a preview gala the evening of Thursday, March 4, and runs daily from Friday, March 5, through Sunday, March 7.

Preview Gala and Champagne Receiption

Already on the evening on March 4, 2010, it’s time for kick off. The event begins with the preview gala, An Evening in the Garden, at 7 p.m. Here collectors have an opportunity to secure the antiques of their choice in the dealer gallery. Meanwhile the elegant black-tie (optional) soiree will be going on in the adjoining tent. One of the highlights of the evening is the performance of the Mary Davis & Company band. Also hors d’oeuvres will be provided by noted caterer Anna Hood and the women of St. Peter’s Church. Dinner stations will feature a variety of cuisines from noted Savannah-based chefs. Call 912-598-9521 for invitation information.

The daily show dates are Friday and Saturday, March 5 & 6, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 3 West Ridge Road, Savannah, located on Skidaway Island, 20 minutes southeast of the city.

Tickets to the show are $8 and are valid for all three days. Tickets may be purchased on site during the event.

Gourmet lunches and desserts, prepared from recipes in St. Peter’s cookbook, Manna from Savannah, are offered daily from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a flower-filled tent adjacent to the dealer showcases.

The Savannah College of Art and Design will host the 29th annual Black Maria Film and Video Festival Friday, March 5, at 8 p.m. at Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St. Admission is $5 for the general public and free with a valid SCAD ID.

The Black Maria Film and Video Festival, started in 1981, is known for its annual roster of bold contemporary works by award-winning independent film- and video-makers that give insight to the human condition, political, social and environmental issues, and aesthetic investigations. It is a traveling showcase that circulates nationwide to more than 50 host institutions. Each location shows a different selection of work, with the Savannah films selected by faculty from SCAD’s film and television department.

“The Black Maria festival continues to provoke and challenge our concept of cinema,” said Michael Chaney, SCAD professor of film and television. “I’m always inspired by these short innovative works of exceptional filmmaking, and there’s always something for everyone.”

SCAD has hosted the festival annually since 1999, screening work by luminaries such as Leighton Pierce, Emily Hubley and Stan Brackhage.

The Black Maria Film and Video Festival’s mission is to advocate, exhibit and reward cutting-edge work from independent film- and video-makers. It is also an opportunity to view exciting and engaging work from both emerging and established filmmakers from around the world.

For more information on the festival, visit the Web site at www.blackmariafilmfestival.org.

Mardi Gras is known for fun and festivities. Mardi Gras traditionally takes place before the fasting season of Lent, its origins go all the way back to the ancient Rome. Many cities continue the tradition today, for example Mobile, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana, and maybe the most famous celebration of them all takes place in Rio de Janeiro.
But did you know that here on the coast of Georgia, we actually have two festivals of our own. St Marys Mardi Gras has a long tradition, in 2010 it’s the 16th year for the annual festival. Tybee Island is slightly behind, celebrating the 2nd Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras St Marys
The 16th Annual Mardi Gras Festival and Parade will showcase festive floats and costumes designed around this year’s theme “Romance Through the Ages.” This is one of the most popular annual festivals in St Marys. Everyone comes downtown to view the Mardi Gras parade and catch beads.

A 10 a.m. parade will kick off the festival and the parade is followed by an action-packed day of entertainment, arts and crafts, and amusements. When the sun goes down , adults can continue to the Mardi Gras Ball. And when I say adults, I mean adults. A new King and Queen are chosen and prizes are awarded for best costumes. Dance music will be provided by the band, “A Touch of Grey”. I warned you, this party is for adults only.

Tickets for the ball are available at the St. Marys Welcome Center and Once Upon a Bookseller in Downtown St. Marys. Beads are also available at the bookstore on days leading up to the festival. For more information, call 912-882-7350 or 912-552-0072.

The Mardi Gras Festival includes a parade and live entertainment on Saturday, February 13th.
For more information, please call St Marys Convention and Visitors Bureau at 912.882.4000 or visit www.stmaryswelcome.com

Mardi Gras Tybee
Tybee Island is celebrating Mardi Gras for the second time this year.
Purple, gold and green flags will dress up Tybee Island for the party. Mardi Gras Tybee kicks off with a Masquerade Ball on Friday, February 12th at 8pm, hosted by Fannies on the Beach. Tickets are $20 in advance, or $25 at the door.

On Saturday February 13th, there will be a Mardi Gras parade at 3pm down Butler Avenue and a street party with music and festivities on Tybrisa Street. Join the fun, listen to authentic Zydeco music featuring Brad Randell and the Zydeco Ballers, All American All Star Dixieland Review and Jeff Beasley Band. The music starts already at noon. Admission to the street party and parade viewing is free.

This is one of the great living history events on the coast of Georgia that returns every year. On Saturday and Sunday, February 6-7, 2010, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., it’s time again for the annual Georgia Days Colonial Faire and Muster. Here you can take a giant step back into history on the site of one of the most beautiful colonial-era plantations of the Georgia coast. Have fun and learn about our past at the same time. Make sure to visit the ruins of the plantation house and slave cabin.

Highlights of this weekend-long event include cannon and musket firing; blacksmithing, craft, and cooking demonstrations; Native American and slave life interpretations; and period music and dance. This is a free event.

The Colonial Faire and Muster is part of GHS’s Georgia Days, a month-long commemoration of Georgia’s rich history, and GHS’s signature educational event of the year.

Savannah Music festival awarded Jazz.Next Implementation Grant to support new jazz technology project

Savannah, Georgia –SWING CENTRAL, the nationally acclaimed high school jazz band competition and workshop produced by the Savannah Music Festival (SMF), is the subject of a new media project that utilizes technology to enhance the promotion of jazz music and education. SMF is one of only five recipients of first-round funding from the national Jazz.NEXT initiative, also including NPR, Monterey Jazz Festival, Walker Art Center and the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. The project is funded by Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation through the generous support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. “Through this technology project, we’re making our unique jazz education efforts accessible to the masses,” remarks SMF Associate Artistic Director of Jazz Education, Marcus Roberts. “The internet is now a primary learning tool for people of all ages, and young people such as the participants in our Swing Central program will benefit greatly from the lessons, artist interviews and audio/video performances that will be hosted at swingcentraljazz.org.”

Over the next two years, the swingcentraljazz.org technology initiative will combine video and audio documentation of SMF’s jazz programs, social and other digital media, and traditional broadcast to promote its efforts to a broader audience, offer supplemental educational content to young jazz musicians, reinforce the creative and academic work of jazz artists, enhance communication between students and teachers, and connect members of the jazz community with each other. The Center for New American Media from New York City has been selected to handle video documentary work relating to the project, and Heideldesign from Savannah will be SMF’s digital media partner. In addition to its wide use within swingcentraljazz.org, the video documentation of the 2010 SWING CENTRAL program will be used to produce a documentary promoting the importance of mentorship and teamwork within the jazz tradition.

The Center for New American Media and its creative partners (Louis Alvarez, Andrew Kolker, and Peter Odabashian) have created some of the most honored and critically praised documentaries on American life and culture over the past 25 years. Twice winners of both the Peabody Award and the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, their work, all of which premiered on public television, includes People Like Us: Social Class in America, Vote for Me: Politics in America, and American Tongues, which deals with American accents. Heideldesign, managed by lead designer and owner, Lee Heidel, has been on the leading edge of web design and development since 1998. Their web development work is featured on the newly redesigned savannahmusicfestival.org.

SCAD Presents Second Annual Holiday Matinee

The Savannah College of Art and Design invites the local community to the second annual SCAD Holiday Matinee, a family-friendly celebration of holiday spirit, Saturday, Dec. 19, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Free Movies at the Trustees Theater

The free event, open to the public and held at SCAD’s historic Trustees Theater, 216 E. Broughton St., will feature screenings of the animated classics “Frosty the Snowman” and “Frosty Returns” beginning at 11 a.m. and the holiday comedy “Elf” at 2 p.m.

Frosty’s adventures in “Frosty the Snowman” are well known to children worldwide. Frosty comes to life to weather the dastardly plans of an evil magician before he finds safety and happiness at the North Pole. His adventures continue in “Frosty Returns,” when Twitchell invents “Summer Wheeze,” a spray-can that instantly removes snow and slush. It falls to Frosty’s friend Holly to keep Frosty from melting and convince everyone that snow is a good thing.

The Savannah College of Art and Design showcases the School of Fine Arts with the inaugural deFINE ART festival. The mission of deFINE ART is to establish an annual fall festival highlighting the School of Fine Arts on par with the nationally recognized spring SCAD Style festival. deFINE ART seeks to celebrate the achievements and outstanding caliber of SCAD’s School of Fine Arts that is actively shaping and giving rise to new artistic expression, dialogue and innovation. Highlighted disciplines include painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

deFINE ART brings a broad range of noted art professionals, alumni and special guests to SCAD with the highly-anticipated Open Studios as the festival anchor.

Friday, November 13

Nene Humphrey Exhibition, Performance and Gallery Talk: “Circling the Center,” Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., 7 p.m.

“Circling the Center” uses the drum circle, one of the oldest forms of human communication, the craft of Victorian mourning braiding, and the sounds generated during the fabrication process as its conceptual underpinnings and physical structure. The exhibition showcases individual weavings made in the gallery by Humphrey, students, faculty and alumni that, combined, create a central structure of woven wire elements based on Victorian mourning braids.

Humphrey earned an M.F.A. degree from York University in Toronto and an M.A. degree from Goddard College in Plainfield, Vt. She has taught at New York University, University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the University of Connecticut. Her work is included in the permanent collections of art centers including the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Ga.; Wilfredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, Havana, Cuba; The Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia, Atlanta; and the Ogden Museum at the University of New Orleans.

Saturday, Nov. 14

Open Studio Night, Alexander Hall, 668 Indian St., and River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 5-8 p.m.

Open Studio Night features original works by SCAD students, faculty and alumni. The event showcases the best of SCAD painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Artwork on exhibit is available for purchase. Guests are invited to visit the college’s studio spaces and experience hands-on demonstrations.

Projections and Motion Paintings, David Ellis and Roberto Lange, River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Blvd., 6-8 p.m.

Nick Cave, Hamilton Hall Parking Lot, 522 Indian St., 8-9 p.m.

Nick Cave is one of the most internationally acclaimed and sought after artists working today. Suggestive of ceremonial garments, costume, haute couture and superhero disguise, Cave’s Soundsuits, or performative wearable sculptures, are intricately ornamented with reclaimed fabric and found objects selected for their symbolism and auditory function. Densely layered in material and meaning, Cave’s otherworldly creations will be performed by Cave, SCAD students and community members as part of the deFINE ART festival in what Cave is calling a spoken word, dance, DJ music extravaganza.

He has been the celebrated recipient of solo exhibitions at such prestigious venues as Jack Shainman Gallery, New York (2008); Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco (currently); and Studio La Citta, Verona, Italy (forthcoming 2010), to name only a few. His work has been reviewed in The New York Times, Modern Painters, The Washington Post, Artforum, The New Yorker, and others, and a recent comprehensive catalogue, “Meet Me At the Center of the Earth,” was published this year. Cave earned an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and a B.F.A. from the Kansas City Art Institute, Kansas City, Mo.

Music:

Unsolved Mysteries, Jon Lynn and Colin Alexander, River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., 9-10 p.m.

The Telfair Art Fair is one of Savannah’s most popular fall events. Held under a large, lighted tent adjacent to historic Telfair Square, this annual event showcases a variety of original art for sale, with something to suit every budget and taste. The 15th Annual Telfair Art Fair from November 14-15, 2009, on Savannah’s historic Telfair Square.

The Telfair Art Fair is a juried art show and sale that showcases spectacular original artwork by painters, sculptors, photographers, potters, jewelers, and more – and it’s one of the museums largest fundraisers of the year.

The weekend kicks-off on the evening of Friday, November 13 with a member preview event, the “Arty Party,” a chic cocktail reception where you can preview artwork and meet artists.

This year’s much-anticipated event features the work of more than seventy artists from the Savannah area and across the nation. The Jepson Center’s Eckburg Atrium will be devoted to Open Art, a new category that highlights the work of talented emerging and student artists.

Awards and Jazz
A short awards ceremony recognizing outstanding artists will be held at noon, with Susan Krane—Oshman Executive Director at the San Jose Museum of Art—presiding as the 2009 Art Fair judge. Also, back by popular demand, the Savannah Country Day Jazz Band and the Savannah Arts Academy Skyelite Jazz Band will perform live jazz music in the square throughout the afternoon.
