Alfred Hitchcock is the master of suspense. Now you have an opportunity to see on of Hitchcock’s most acclaimed but rarely screened classics. The classic Strangers on a Train from 1951 is screening at the Historic Ritz Theatre in Downtown Brunswick on Thursday, July 22, at 7:00 p.m.

The screenplay was adapted by acclaimed mystery writer Raymond Chandler from the novel by famous author Patricia Highsmith. Many of Patricia Highsmith’s books have been adapted for the silver screen, including The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) starring Matt Damon and Jude Law.

The film features Farley Granger, who also starred in Hitchcock’s Rope a few years earlier, as a famous tennis pro who unwittingly becomes ensnared in a malicious plot concocted by the wealthy, decadent Bruno. played by Robert Walker. Alfred Hitchcock’s own daughter, Patricia, also has a supporting role in the movie.

This film is the fourth in the Summer Classic Movies at the Ritz series presented by Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association (GIAHA).

Every week of the Summer Classic Movies series features a selection of fun and rare short subjects beginning at 6:30 p.m. This week’s screening includes a short film about train travel in the 1950s (appropriately enough) and a classic cartoon about a mischievous boy on a runaway train saved by his faithful dog. There is also free popcorn (first come, first served), as well as door-prize drawings and special offers from local merchants.

Admission to Strangers on a Train is $5. Doors open at 5:00. Ticket holders can show their tickets at Arte Pizza, a couple of doors down from the Ritz on Newcastle St., and get 10% off their meal before the show.

The series continues the remaining Thursday evening in July with the landmark 1968 film Bonnie and Clyde (July 29). The grand finale of the season will be a special matinee of Gone with the Wind on Sunday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m. Audiences can purchase tickets at the door to see just the movie and shorts for $5. Advance tickets are also on sale for $12, which entitles the ticket holder to admission plus a delicious intermission Silver Screen Snack catered by Southern Soul Barbeque: a pulled pork slider and two sides that you can take back into the theater and enjoy during the second half of the show. Advance tickets can be ordered on line at goldenislesarts.org; in person at the Ritz, 1530 Newcastle St., Downtown; or by phone(912-262-6934).

“Cary Grant is easily the most requested and best-loved star of any of the movies we’ve shown in the summer classic series, so we’re happy to present another of his great roles,” notes GIAHA’s Rob Nixon. “And it’s especially wonderful to see him with one of his best on-screen partners, Katharine Hepburn. This was the fourth and final time they appeared together, and their romantic chemistry and comic sparring is a joy to watch.”

Nixon adds that this was perhaps the most important picture in Hepburn’s nearly seven-decade career. A couple of years prior to this, she was one of several actresses declared “box office poison” by a motion picture trade magazine. Many thought her career was finished, but with her characteristically steely Yankee determination, she returned to her first love, theater, appearing in the stage version of The Philadelphia Story to sold-out audiences. When MGM went to buy the film rights to the Broadway hit with the intention of producing it for one of their big stars, they found that Hepburn owned the property—the only way they could bring it to the screen was with her in it! The result was a triumph all around, not only restoring Hepburn’s film career but creating a new image that would shape the rest of her performances for the next 50+ years.

It was also an important role for James Stewart. The young star had broken through to major success the year before with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, earning him the first of five Oscar nominations. Stewart didn’t win then, but he did get the award a year later for The Philadelphia Story, holding his own with Grant and Hepburn as a “man of the people” writer who learns a few things about how the other half lives.

The movie starts at 7:00 p.m., but audiences who arrive at least a half hour early will also be treated to entertaining short subjects, including cartoons, coming attractions, and newsreels, just like the old-time movie experience. And there will be free popcorn (first come, first served) generously provided by Angie Aimar and James Laurens of Coldwell Banker Platinum Partners. Each night of the film series also features door-prize drawings and special offers from local merchants.

Admission to The Philadelphia Story, and to every film in the series, is only $5 for all ages. The first five films of the series are screened on Thursday nights in July at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:00, leaving ample time to buy a ticket and take advantage of the many dining opportunities in Downtown Brunswick before the show.

The series concludes with a special matinee showing of Gone with the Wind on Sunday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m.

Advance tickets can be ordered on line at goldenislesarts.org; in person at the Ritz, 1530 Newcastle St., Downtown; or by phone with credit card (262-6934).

On Sunday June 27th, 2010, it’s time again for Jazz in the Park at St. Simons Island. The event takes place outside the St Simons Island Lighthouse and is scheduled at high tide to take advantage of the breeze from the ocean. And this weekend, I think we will need all the breeze we can get.

But don’t let the heat keep you indoors. Instead, take advantage of the nice summer weather and spend an evening outside under the stars and enjoy a great jazz performance.

This Sunday the Savannah Stompers are performing.

This is one of the great living history events on the coast of Georgia that returns every year. On Saturday and Sunday, February 6-7, 2010, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., it’s time again for the annual Georgia Days Colonial Faire and Muster. Here you can take a giant step back into history on the site of one of the most beautiful colonial-era plantations of the Georgia coast. Have fun and learn about our past at the same time. Make sure to visit the ruins of the plantation house and slave cabin.

Highlights of this weekend-long event include cannon and musket firing; blacksmithing, craft, and cooking demonstrations; Native American and slave life interpretations; and period music and dance. This is a free event.

The Colonial Faire and Muster is part of GHS’s Georgia Days, a month-long commemoration of Georgia’s rich history, and GHS’s signature educational event of the year.

Painter, Jo Elliott and bird sculptor Chuck Robertson are inspired by nature and devoted to capture its beauty. These talented artists will be showcasing their inspired works in an upcoming exhibit sponsored by the Jekyll Island Arts Association in the Gallery of Goodyear Cottage in Jekyll Island’s Historic District.

Coastal Georgia Is Inspiration
Painter, Jo Elliott has been interested in art as long as she can remember. At an early age, she accompanied her father as he conducted drawing and painting classes at the local art guild in Greenville, Ohio. She admits, “I am fortunate to have this very talented artist and teacher in my family.” Jo’s Dad continues to encourage her to ‘paint rich’ and to tell a story with each paintings. With her children grown and having retired from the insurance industry a few years ago, Jo feels fortunate to be able to devote more time to her love of art. Living on the Georgia coast provides an endless source of creative material for her watercolor and acrylic landscapes. Around every corner Jo feels is an interesting scene to capture, whether it is a shrimp boat heading out, an egret keeping watch over a tidal creek, or the way light and shadows define a sand dune.

Art by Chuck Robertson

It’s All About Birds
A large part of bird sculptor, Chuck Robertson’s life has been about birds since 1981. It was at this time that he decided to find something more personally satisfying in his life. Stumbling into an art show Chuck was captivated by sculptures of birds. He had spent much of his life outdoors as a kid and had always enjoyed creating things with his hands. Chuck was mesmerized by the idea of bird sculpture and has made this his profession and life’s work since carving his very first bird. Chuck’s work consists of very realistic and detailed sculptures of birds. His goal is to capture a moment in nature and to bring that excitement into his sculpture and ultimately to the viewer.

Edisto Park is located in one of the most beautiful areas on the South Carolina coast. If you’re in the Charleston area – you should try to drive out for a visit.

You probably already know that the loggerhead turtle is an endangered sea turtle that comes to our beaches in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida to lay eggs. Many parks on the coast have special educational programs about the fascinating sea turtle. At Edisto Park you can learn all about these fascinating animals.

After a short program, the group will go down the beach in search of a nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Kids need to be 10 or older to participate, and you will of course have to be prepared to walk, so wear you’re best walking shoes.
There’s no guarantee that you will actually see sea turtles – or hatchlings, you might see tracks, and who knows? You might be one of the lucky ones who get to see a loggerhead sea turtle returning to the ocean after laying her eggs.
The loggerhead sea turtle is the South Carolina state reptile and is the most commonly observed sea turtle off the South Carolina coast.
In any case, nesting season lasts from May – August. Usually hatchlings emerge at night and head for the ocean.

Edisto park also has a campground, hiking trails, picnic areas and a playground. So why not bring the whole gang, a picnic basket, blankets and make a day of it. There is a lot to discover in this area.

The Edisto Interpretive Center helps promote the wise use of coastal resources. An exhibit features interactive displays, including a touch tank, and explains the fragile resources of the ACE Basin reserve, the largest such natural reserve on the East Coast.

Savannah Swings!

This event has become a yearly tradition in Savannah, and no wonder. It’s definitely very special way to celebrate the 4th of July. Just listen to this.

First, start out with a delicious picnic catered by the First City Club in Reynolds Square. There is really no better way to get a feel for the first city than by spending time in the squares, and why not a picnic. It is after all Fourth of July.

After the picnic, it’s time to head inside the cool Lucas Theater. This time of year, heading inside, can be a great way to cool off. Now you’re going to experience a cool jazz concert with “Jeremy Davis and the Fabulous Equinox Jazz Orchestra” with singers Clay Johnson, Adam Jones, Trae Gurley and Huxsie Scott and Special Guest Kim Polote.
Don’t get too relaxed, because then it’s time to move to the beat, this time we’re following the band’s lead. We’re follwing the musicians in a New Orleans-style procession from the front of the Lucas, down the Abercorn ramp, all the way down to River Street. Here it’s time to sit again. This is where you’ll find the best seat in the town for fireworks viewing right on the river. Savannah swings!

Tickets for the concert, parade and seats are $25 for adults, and $10 children 12 and under. There is a $5 discount for military, fire & police.

Tickets for the picnic are available for an additional $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under.

The picnic is 3.30 – 5.oo pm and the concert starts at 6 p.m. at the Lucas Theatre.

All tickets are available by calling 912-525-5050.
