Take the National Park Service’s ferry to Rattlesnake Island and experience daily military life at Fort Matanzas – the 18th century Spanish fort that guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine. Participants, if they desire, may get down and dirty in the demonstration rice field and assist with the planting! Before cotton was king and rice reigned supreme, South Carolina colonists struggled to find a cash crop that would provide them with a life of luxury. Colonists experimented with a variety of plants for both produce and profit. Join us at Charles Town Landing for “From Seeds to Shillings: Growing Wealth at Charles Towneâ€. See costumed interpreters working in the crop garden and ask them what they are growing. Learn how colonial crops were used as medicines, fragrances, and dyes. Talk to the apothecary about health and healing. Experience colonial colors and fragrances as you participate in indigo dying and in making your own sweetbag, a colonial form of perfume. Visit the communal lodging house to see what’s on the menu and watch how an indentured servant would have cooked meals over an open hearth.

Sheep and Wool Days at Middleton Place
Experience the joys of sheep and the crafts made from their wool during Sheep and Wool days at Middleton Place. See sheep dogs herding and sheep being sheared and bathed. Artisans will be dyeing, spinning, weaving and knitting with wool. Adults may participate in a wine and sheep cheese tasting while children enjoy fun activities making crafts out of wool. Charles Towne Landing Hosts Annual “Founders’ Day†Festival – Charleston, South Carolina
Several groups of re-enactors dressed in 17th-century costume will demonstrate an array of living history programs portraying the lifeways of the colonists including the firing of blackpowder cannons and muskets, as well as cooking and other daily chores crucial to the colony’s survival. They will take place inside the palisade wall that protected the colonists during Charles Towne’s earliest days. Since 2008 also marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of South Carolina State Parks, a ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. honoring the state park legacy. Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site is located on Old Towne Road (S.C. 171), near exit 216-A off Interstate 26. Admission to the park is $5 for adults, $3.25 for South Carolina seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 15 and free for children 5 and younger.
