Blessing of the Fleet, Darien

This popular event is the biggest event in McIntosh county. Every spring the Blessing of the Fleet celebrates the opening of the shrimping season. The 44th Annual Blessing of the Fleet takes place on April 20 – 22, 2012, when the small town of Darien creates a party on the riverfront with food, live entertainment, vendors, arts and crafts and more.

The Schedule

On Friday, there is a concert with Black Hawk and on Saturday Sensational Sounds of Motown performs.

On Saturday at 10 am there is a big street parade to set the party in motion. There is also a 5K run, a miss Blessing contest, Art in the Park and car show. The actual blessing takes place on Sunday at 2 pm. Decorated shrimp boats will pass under the bridge to recieve their blessing.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Darien before, this is a great time to do so. Plenty of vendors participate. There’s all kinds of food, from fresh Georgia shrimp to cotton candy, lots of activities for the kids and live music. Visit the website for a detailed schedule at www.blessingofthefleet.com
