The Greater Savannah Sports Council, Visit Savannah and the Competitor Group, Inc. have announced that the Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon race has already recorded over 10,000 registrations. The race is slated for November 5, 2011 and will begin in front of City Hall on Bay Street. The course will then feature many great locations and concerts throughout Savannah, ending in Forsyth Park for the Finish Line Festival. Â
“It’s no surprise to us that Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah has quickly gained popularity among our runners, but we’re certainly pleased with the response,†said Malain McCormick, Competitor Group’s Savannah event director. “The city offers exactly what we were looking for as we expanded into the Southeast, and clearly, it’s a destination that people across the country are excited to visit.â€
Very early projections for Savannah were between 10,000 – 12,000 participants. Now, that number is expected to grow to 15,000 – 17,000. The Competitor Group, Inc. projects that over 70% of the participants will be from out-of-town and their statistics say that each runner brings approximately 1.6 additional people with them.
“Hotels from the Historic District, airport area and throughout the Southside are already reporting a boost in rooms sales for that week,†said Joseph Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah, “with the race still five months away, we expect a steady growth in those numbers and a very, very busy week!â€
Race participants are expected to begin arriving early in the week to enjoy Savannah-area attractions, tours, dining and shopping. It is mandatory that all participants arrive early to pick up their registration packet at the two day Health & Fitness Expo on November 3 – 4, 2011.
“A lot of runners are taking advantage of early discounts for our race, which has provided a nice surge in our pre-registration numbers. We definitely expect that trend to continue into the summer,†said Ben Wilder, director of the Greater Savannah Sports Council.
