Savannah is not only known for architecture and gardens, it is also an important harbor and has been so for a very long time. In the month of May Savannah is visited by an event that brings ships and seafarers to the forefront during an event called the Tall Ships Challenge.
The Tall Ships Challenge is an annual race and this year will be the first tall-ship festival to call on Savannah since 1998. Savannah has received the honor of being the starting point for the 2012 event. Ships are scheduled to arrive on May 3, 2012 and depart early on May 7, 2012.
The race will stop at four other ports along the Atlantic coast…. Charleston, Greenport, Newport, and then the race finishes in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Savannah visit will feature ship tours for the public, kids’ activities, day sails and concerts along River Street and on Hutchinson Island. Visitors will be able to view all the ships, board many and even sail aboard some of your favorites. The Tall Ships Challenge in Savannah takes play May 3 to May 7. Charleston is the next stop May 10 – 14, 2012.
