(Charleston, SC) – Mr. William Stewart, Marjabelle Young Stewart’s husband, has given his blessing to the honoring of his wife’s memory to Ms. Cindy Grosso, owner of Charleston School of Protocol, so that she may continue his wife’s legacy. Ms. Grosso has assumed the responsibility of compiling the annual Most Mannerly Cities list.
Marjabelle Young Stewart, nationally renowned etiquette expert, named Charleston, South Carolina the Most Mannerly City in America for the final 11 years that she bestowed the award. The winner was chosen based on comments from executives and those who completed her etiquette courses. She also considered thousands of letters, faxes, e-mails and phone calls. Throughout her lifetime, Mrs. Stewart worked tirelessly to promote the good manners and proper etiquette that are benchmarks of a prospering society.
Since Charleston was the longstanding recipient of this honor, the city has now been deemed worthy of recognition in the form of the Lifetime Achievement Award that Ms. Cindy Grosso presented to the Mayor on August 21, 2007 at the Charleston City Council meeting. During that time, Ms. Grosso announced the launch of a city-wide campaign, which includes donating her time to teach front-line local hospitality staff etiquette techniques titled “Your Manners Matter” series.
“Marjabelle Young Stewart offered the nation a respected standard for civility. We are pleased that the wonderful kind people of Charleston were able to be a part of the process that helped her to raise the bar. Her efforts will continue, and this generous gesture to forever mark Charleston as a Most Mannerly City is a tremendous honor,” said City of Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr.
Ms. Terri Haack, Managing Director for Wild Dunes Resort, noted that it’s fitting to have a Charlestonian take over these duties. “Charleston’s citizens are living in an era of great progress. We are trying - and succeeding - at balancing an increasingly rushed society with our trademark grace, charm and hospitality. It’s a testament to the strength of the culture here. We’re really being twice-honored in that one of our own has been asked to assume this responsibility.”
