Members of the Charleston Museum and the Coastal Conservation League are invited to a special screening of The Curious Mister Catesby, a new documentary which examines the life and the legacy of pioneering naturalist, Mark Catesby (1682-1749). Catesby’s two-volume Natural History of Carolina, Florida and The Bahama Islands was the first extensively illustrated work on the natural history of any region in North America. Catesby’s work influenced Linnaeus and his system of classification of plants and animals, and predates Audubon’s The Birds of America by almost a century. The film will be introduced by one of the documentary’s producers, David Elliott. The Charleston Museum will display its first edition copy (one of only approximately 80 remaining copies) of Natural History of Carolina, Florida and The Bahama Islands. Please note reservation arrangements. Reservations are required as space is limited. Priority registration will be given to Charleston Museum and SCCCL members. After September 15, registration will be opened up to the general public, so please register early!
