Fourth of July at Middleton Place – Charleston, South Carolina

June 16, 2007 by Joe Talentino

What better way to celebrate the July 4th holiday than by visiting the home of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence?

Arthur Middleton (1742-1787) is buried in the family tomb at Middleton Place. Visitors can see the tomb and tour the Gardens, House Museum and Plantation Stabelyards from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.

In 1764, Arthur and his bride Mary Izard settled at Middleton Place. A tour of the Middleton Place House Museum showcases much of the artwork, silver and china they brought back from their extended Europeon grand tour.

In 1776, Arthur was elected to succeed his father as South Carolina‘s delegate to the Continental Congress, and in that capacity he became one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
