SAVANNAH, Ga. – A vibrant display of handmade quilts created by members of the Georgia Quilt Council, Inc., will be on display at the City of Savannah’s Gallery S.P.A.C.E. Aug. 13 through Sept. 28.
The exhibit, “Crazy Quilts for Modern Times”, will showcase a collection of contemporary Crazy Quilts — patchwork quilts of pieces of cloth of various shapes, colors, and sizes, sewn together in an irregular pattern. Works on display will range from traditional intricate handwork to contemporary interpretations, building on the irregular patchwork and decorative embellishments that emerged with the Crazy Quilt style during the late 1800’s. Complimenting the Crazy Quilts will be other quilting styles from Savannah collections, including full-sized quilts, clothing, hand- and machine-quilted items and embroidery works.
An artist reception, lecture and demonstrations will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition. The artists’ reception will be held on Aug. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature the Palmetto Quilt Guild’s prize quilt, Big Blue. On Aug. 24 at 7 p.m., Sidney Brand will present a free lecture entitled, “Color My Quilt.” Quilting demonstrations will take place Sept. 6, 13 and 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
S. P. A. C. E. is located at 9 West Henry St. (between Bull and Whitaker Streets). Free off-street parking is available. For more information, please contact (912) 651-6782 or visit www.savannahga.gov/arts.
