August 1, 2007 by Susanne Talentino

“WOMAN/MUJER: POEMS BY LATIN AMERICAN WOMEN” – A BILINGUAL READING
Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007

Art Advocate Gallery
76 B San Marco Avenue
St. Augustine, FL 32084

904.377.1323

Spanning five centuries, this program begins with poems by Aztec women and traces the feminine response to the abuses of machismo up to the present generation of poets. Hear from poets as varied as Mexican nun Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, perhaps the most brilliant writer of the colonial period, who struggled for her right to pursue a life of the mind, and Chilean writer Gabriela Mistral, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. The reading is bilingual, and the Spanish texts will be read by Martha Margaride and Zita Narváez and translated by Jo Anne Engelbert. The program is co-sponsored by Jane’s Stories Press Foundation and the St. Johns Cultural Council.
