Virginia by Design: Thomas Jefferson and the Making of Monticello – Savannah, Georgia

September 5, 2007 by Susanne Talentino

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Virginia by Design: Thomas Jefferson and the Making of Monticello,” a lecture by noted architectural historian Camille Wells, Sept. 18, 6:30-8 p.m., at the Student Center, 120 Montgomery St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Wells, a guest lecturer at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., will explore how Thomas Jefferson’s designs for Monticello, traditionally seen by architects and historians as emphasizing classical influences, also reveal a different understanding of Jefferson’s life as a designer.

The lecture is presented by the SCAD architectural history department and is the first in a yearlong series. SCAD is one of the few institutions in the nation to offer Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs specifically in architectural history.
