Sustainable Seafood – South Carolina

November 20, 2007 by Susanne Talentino

In South Carolina local chefs are doing their part to going green with the help of the Sustainable Seafood Initiative. Created in October 2002 by several of Charleston’s finest chefs and restaurants, the South Carolina Aquarium, Coastal Conservation League, Johnson and Wales University and the University of South Carolina, the Sustainable Seafood Initiative was formed to address the status of certain seafood species in the wild. Initiative participants, including a variety of top chefs, restaurants and catering companies make every effort to obtain seafood from sustainable and, whenever possible, domestic and local sources.

Funded by the South Carolina Aquarium, the Sustainable Seafood Initiative has grown to include more than 80 restaurant partners in Charleston, Beaufort, Hilton Head and the Grand Strand – and each partner is an integral part of the annual sustainable seafood festival held at the Charleston Maritime Center in October. This year the event boasted record attendance and sales numbers of visitors joining in the festivities to provide support for the conservation program. Favorite events include the “Local Chef Face-Off” as well as the “High School Recipe Contest.” For more information please visit the South Carolina Aquarium ‘s website.
