The Old Florida Museum is offering its first Black History Home School Experience on Monday, February 4, 2008. This streamlined version of the popular educational programs for school groups focuses on the rich heritage of African-Americans and the crucial roles they played during often-overlooked periods of Black history.
The Hands-On Black History Home School Experience is designed to expose students to daily living activities of the Black Seminole Indians, Free Black Communities and the Black Florida Cow Hunters. Guides will provide history and instruction in the use of tools and games from each time period. Students will also make a take-home project in each of the three time periods.
Sessions will be offered from 10 AM to 1 PM, and from 2 PM to 5 PM. Cost is $9.00 per person, age four and up. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The Old Florida Museum is located at 254D San Marco Avenue at the corner of State Road 16. Entrance is through the Old Florida General Store, which faces S.R. 16. Please call 904-824-8874 for reservations.
“One goal of the Old Florida Museum is to bring knowledge of the past forward to the people of today” said Lindsay Strohecker. “During this month of Black History recognition join us for a blast from the past.”
The museum complex will show the rich African-American past of Florida authentically re-created for all to experience. The museum also includes the 1800’s style Old Florida General Store, featuring many unusual and old-fashioned items.
