January 16, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah College of Art and Design will host the 27th Black Maria Film and Video Festival Feb. 16, 8 p.m., at Lucas Theatre, 32 Abercorn St. The festival is free with a valid SCAD ID and $5 for the general public.

The Black Maria Film and Video Festival is an international traveling showcase of independent short films and videos, stopping nationwide at more than 55 host institutions. The festival strives to identify, showcase and reward compelling new independent media, reach audiences in a wide variety of venues and advocate exceptional achievements by diverse artists who expand the expressive terrain of film and video.

Each venue screens a different selection of films and videos introduced by the festival’s director. SCAD film and television faculty will select program selections prior to screening. Some of the past festivals have included pieces by luminaries such as Leighton Pierce, Emily Hubley and Stan Brakhage,

SCAD has hosted the Black Maria Film and Video Festival since 1999.

In 2002 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted to recognize documentary films presented at the Black Maria Film and Video Festival as eligible for Academy Award® consideration in the short form and feature documentary categories.
