The works of local middle and high school students will be showcased at the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs’ Gallery S.P.A.C.E. from Feb. 4 through 22 during the seventh annual New Beginnings Youth Art Exhibition.
Works on display will focus on the 2008 Savannah Black Heritage Festival theme, “Yesterday’s Story, Today’s Legacy.” The juried exhibition is presented by the Savannah chapter of The Links, Inc., a volunteer organization committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture of African Americans.
“New Beginnings provides an opportunity for local youth to express their cultural viewpoint,” said Virginia Edwards, president of the Savannah chapter of The Links, Inc.  “The show is a creative outlet where they can be recognized and rewarded for their achievement.”
A wide range of media will be represented. Winning artists will be announced at an opening reception which will be held on Feb. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.
As part of the reception, Abeni Cultural Arts will be presenting a free performance in the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. beginning at 7:30 p.m. The performance, entitled Visions: An Odyssey in Black Dance, will present a journey through history with African music and dance.
