SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Studies in Roman Provincial Architecture,†a lecture by noted art historian Jim Frakes, Ph.D., Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m., at the River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Frakes, assistant professor with the University of North Carolina-Charlotte department of art and art history, is an expert on Roman visual culture under the Severan emperors during A.D. 193-235. His research focuses on the serialization of Roman architecture at that time, exploring how this approach became the dominant visual strategy of control. Serialization made visible the extent of empire and opened opportunities for individuals to become a part of the imperial project.
The SCAD architectural history department presents the event as part of its yearlong lecture series. SCAD is one of the few institutions in the nation to offer Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs specifically in architectural history.
