SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design liberal arts department Visiting Writers Series presents “An Evening with Eric Miles Williamson,†a reading with the noted critic, editor and author of “East Bay Grease,†“Two-Up†and “Oakland, Jack London, and Me,†Feb. 28, 6 p.m., SCAD Student Center, 120 Montgomery St. The event is free and open to the public.
Williamson grew up in Oakland, Calif., the son of a single mother who rode with and housed Hell’s Angels gang members. He worked as a union laborer for seven years and was witness to a number of men dismembered or killed on the job. After his time as a construction worker, Williamson decided to better himself by studying, often reading more than three books per day for more than a decade. His first novel, “East Bay Grease,†published by Picador USA in 1999, catapulted Williamson into the literary world.
The Los Angeles Times book review named “East Bay Grease†one of the best books of 1999, and Williamson was named a PEN/Hemingway finalist for the work. The New York Times Book Review called Williamson’s writing “transcendent.â€
As a distinguished literary critic, Williamson’s reviews have appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle Book Review, Houston Chronicle, Christian Science Monitor and Pleiades. He has served three terms on the National Book Critics Circle board of directors and acts as an editor for the American Book Review, Boulevard and The Texas Review.
