AWOL’s 3rd Annual Hip Hop History Play – Savannah, Georgia

February 19, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

The Civil Rights Generation Meets the Hip Hop Generation
Friday, February 22 at 7 p.m. Presented by AWOL Inc.

AWOL was started in 1997 on Savannah State Universities campus by Mr. Tony “Polo” Jordan and a small group of friends. AWOL was the first registered campus-based spoken word (poetry) organization. The organization functioned as an outlet for young artist to express themselves through the artistic forms of poetry and rap.

To date, AWOL has hosted hundreds of spoken word events on and off the campus. AWOL is known in the area as a leader in the spoken word and hip-hop movements. As the organizations founding members grew, so did the mission of the organization.
Lead by Tony Jordan, the organization left the campus in 2001 to pursue a more aggressive goal. The goal was to provide at-risk youth living in Savannah with a safe “space” to express themselves during the hours most relevant to them, after school and at night. AWOL All Walks of Life Inc is Savannahs first and only spoken word (poetry) and hip-hop based youth development organization. AWOL’s mission is to promote and provide self-awareness through the use of poetry, hip-hop and life. This mission is met by providing young people with safe afternoon and night time youth programs that encourage education, respect, creativity and most of all nonviolence.
