The Second Annual Laurel Hill Primary PTA Family Fun Run/Walk is gearing up for a day of running, health fairs, kids’ fun and partnership with the Special Olympics. The one-mile fun run and walk will kick off on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. in the Park West subdivision. The race is set to be lead by fitness guru T-Bone and team members of the Special Olympics. “While the race is organized by the Laurel Hill Primary School PTA, we are hoping that kids and parents from all over the area will participate,†says E.C. Setser, Laurel Hill PTA President.
Proceeds from this year’s run, also known as “Turtle Trot 2008,†will be used to upgrade the school’s fitness trail, which is available to the public after school hours, to accommodate handicapped individuals and to fund the addition of interactive Smartboards to the classrooms. One of the most exciting additions for this year’s event is the participation of team members from the Special Olympics. A portion of the proceeds from each participant registration and sponsorship this year will also be donated to the Lowcountry Chapter of the Special Olympics. “We, Special Olympics runners, their coaches, families and running partners, are so excited to be a part of the 2nd Turtle Run/Walk. The athletes are practicing two times a week to get in shape and to lead the run. Thank you to the organizers for recognizing these worthy athletes†says Susie Goss, Director of Special Olympics South Carolina.
Following the run, a health fair will be conducted from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm where local health professionals and businesses will share tips and advice with race participants. Sponsors for the health fair include Kids Teeth, Bay Tree Orthodontics, Doctor’s Care, Advanced Animal Care of Mt. Pleasant, Livereri Orthodontics, Ruby’s Academy, St. Peters, Edward Jones, Low Country Pool & Spa, The Children’s Center and Dunes West Golf Club. At the same time, a kids’ area will provide fun activities such as face painting by Susan Fedor, jump castles from Fun 4 You Rentals, and a fire truck from the Park West Fire Station #5. Other kids’ area participants include Carvel ice cream, Blackbeards Cove, Chick-Fil-A and Ready Set Jump. The health fair and kids’ area promise to provide great information and fun for all of the run participants.
Registration for the run is $10 through April 7th and then $15 until May 2, 2008. Each participant’s race packet will include a T-shirt and bib number.
