On May 5th in the United States, we celebrate Mexican culture and ancestry – similiar to what we do for Irish heritage on St. Patrick’s Day, German heritage with Oktoberfest, and the Chinese New Year for Chinese ancestry. The holiday is actually not the “Mexico’s Independance Day” (which is September 16). Cinco de Mayo commemorates one of the most significant victories for the Mexican militia over the French army in 1862 and now serves as a reason to celebrate every aspect of the Mexican culture.
Regardless of your ethnic origin, you can still enjoy Cinco de Mayo, and what better way than to by creating your own Mexican fiesta complete with delicious Shrimp Tacos.
The recipe below is by Sam “The Cooking Guy”: Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos, and is an absolute favorite of ours. Savory and festive, this recipe blends the traditional Mexican flavors with a new twist – making them the ultimate addition to an authentic Cinco de Mayo menu. And who said, that you can only enjoy a mexican menu for Cinco de Mayo anyway? Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos is perfect for any gathering of friends, and is best enjoy with Margeritas. We prefer using Wild Georgia Shrimp for this recipe!
Tequila Herradura Shrimp Tacos
The Tequila Herradura and Newcastle combo give these tacos an amazing flavor – but also an amazing flame if you’re not careful. So be sure to add them to the pan off the heat.
Makes 10
1 lb peeled, uncooked shrimp cut into smallish pieces
2 large cloves garlic, minced fine
½ cup cilantro, chopped fine
Peanut oil, for sautéing
¼ cup Tequila Herradura
¼ cup Newcastle Brown Ale
10 corn tortillas, warmed
1/2 cup sour cream
1 cup purple cabbage, shredded fine
Your favorite hot sauce
Combine shrimp, cilantro and garlic in a medium bowl – mix well and let sit about 10 minutes – if you have more time that’s good, just put them in the fridge
Heat no-stick pan really well and then add about 1 tablespoon peanut oil
Add shrimp and stir fry quickly – they’ll cook fast
When almost cooked, remove from heat (you don’t want a flame-up) and add the tequila and beer – mix gently
After about a minute, return to the heat and stir well
Serve by putting some sour cream on a tortilla, then a little cabbage, the shrimp and a final drizzle of the hot sauce. Enjoy!
