Open Mic in Beaufort, South Carolina

July 6, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

Verbalicious: A spit fire Spoken Word Open Mic Set to satisfy your appetite.
Hosted by spoken wordsmith LaShanta Ase, Verbalicious will be held at the Arts Council of Beaufort County on Saturdays, July 12th and 26th at 7:00 p.m.

What is Spoken Word?
Poetry and Prose in Motion. “It is like watching someone perform a rhythmic monologue,” explained Ase. “But, an explanation of the noun ‘spoken word’, does it no justice. You have to experience it. It has a way of captivating an audience. The emotion and intensity that moves from speaker to listener can be quite profound.”

Who is LaShanta Ase? She is a writer, a performer, and brings her own musical accompaniment in the form of Andre Minor on acoustic guitar. She is a Kennedy Center trained Residency Artist who works in Beaufort County Schools, and she is on the SC Arts Commission’s Roster of Approved Artists. She recently presented a Spoken Word workshop, which was part of the Arts Council of Beaufort County Get Your Art Out emerging artist initiative.

The cost to attend Verbalicious is $5. Contact LaShanta at 597-2811 for more info. The Arts Council of Beaufort County is located at 1111 Boundary Street, in uptown Beaufort, across from the Boys & Girls Club, until August 1st, when it will re-open in Beaufort Town Center, also on Boundary Street. www.beaufortcountyarts.com
