“STIX N’ STONZ” Munny – POW TOUR Art Auction – Charleston, SC

July 21, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

“STIX n’ STONZ Munny P.O.W Tour” is the promotional event introducing AFFA’s “Reel Grits – S.C. LGBT Film Festival. STIX n’ STONZ will challenge one of societies oldest school yard chants, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” While one cannot only be physically brutalized, the power given to a single word can emotionally abuse, dehumanize, socially stigmatize and divide a nation. STIX n’ STONZ, will focus on those words that have the ability to oppress, silence and invoke such strength of emotions that the phrase, “…words will never hurt,” does not ring true. Artists will be challenged to visually define words often used to do just that to the LGBT community and their allies. Some artists may choose to embrace a word and put an empowering spin on it. The bottom line, our goal is to educate.

“STIX n’ STONZ – MUNNY P.O.W TOUR”

Urban Outfitters Garden Theater 371 King Street Charleston SC

September 27, 2008

6pm – 10pm

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES: SEPTEMBER 20, 2008

The “Stix n’ Stonz” art show is a promotional fundraising event presented by AFFA and co-sponsored by Urban Outfitters. For those of you who are wondering, “What the F-unny is a Munny?!…” visit our page at www.myspace.com/stixundstonz to see a sample what other artists around the world have done with this peculiar DIY doll (for even more Google images munny). You will see that ANYTHING is possible but to put it plainly, a munny is a vinyl doll/creature developed by Kid Robot (www.kidrobot.com). You can paint on it (most artists use acrylics), cut it, build onto it with sculp-ee, add to it, and upholster it, even decoupage if that’s your thing. The possibilities really are endless.

Due to the nature of this show, it seemed logical to approach the underground artists of Charleston to represent and showcase their work.
