She’s called The Ship That Would Not Die and the weekend of August 8-10, 2008 visitors to Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum on Charleston Harbor will have the chance to see the destroyer USS Laffey in a whole new way!
WWII era living historians will be aboard the famous destroyer to greet visitors, talk about the ship and tell the story of how Laffey earned the nickname The Ship That Would Not Die.
Laffey and her crew were the target of one of the most ferocious enemy aerial attacks in all of WWII. The April 16, 1945 attack off the island of Okinawa crippled the ship leaving nearly a third of the crew dead or wounded. The living historians aboard Laffey will explain to visitors how the ship, not only managed to survive, but mounted an extraordinary counter attack.
