Florida Heritage Book Festival – St Augustine

This festival on Sept 12-13 celebrates the books that bring Florida alive and offers a great opportunity to meet and learn from dozens of authors.

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Sept. 2) A September 12 Meet the Authors reception at the beautiful Markland House in St. Augustine will provide an outstanding opportunity for attendees to meet forty award-winning and bestselling authors from throughout Florida. The reception provides the perfect ending to a day filled with informative workshops for aspiring writers – key events in the Florida Heritage Book Festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 12-13 in St. Augustine.

Meet the Authors reception at the beautiful Markland House in St. Augustine will provide an outstanding opportunity for attendees to meet forty award-winning and bestselling authors from throughout Florida. The reception provides the perfect ending to a day filled with informative workshops for aspiring writers – key events in the Florida Heritage Book Festival scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 12-13 in St. Augustine.

The Meet the Authors reception will be held on Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the historic Markland House on the campus of Flagler College. In addition to mixing and mingling with festival authors, the event will feature a heavy hors d’oeuvre buffet, wines, entertainment (including historical portrayals) and music blended with literary company and conversation. The festival’s Craft of Writing workshops will be conducted on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Presented by distinguished writing and publishing professionals, the 14 workshops provide aspiring authors with the ideal opportunity to learn about topics such as scene structuring, pacing, marketing, working with an editor, overcoming writer’s block – even the intricacies of entertainment law. The fee for the full day of workshops is only $45 and includes lunch, breaks and all conference materials. The Florida Heritage Book Festival will feature a wide array of events and activities promoting reading and literacy. These will include workshops, readings and book signings by popular authors, as well as hands-on programs to be conducted in local schools. All genres will be featured including history, nature, mystery, culture and children’s interest. Except for a few ticketed events, including a motorized tour of the city’s literary landmarks to be conducted on Saturday at noon and 11 a.m., all of the festival’s events will be open to the public and provided free of charge.

All proceeds from the Florida Heritage Book Festival will benefit the Friends of the Libraries of St. Johns County and Newspaper In Education which provides free newspapers each day to local teachers and students. Riverside Arts Festival – Jacksonville

In its 37th year, the Riverside Arts Festival is one of the South’s premier juried art competitions, attracting hundreds of artists and thousands of visitors to historic Riverside Park. This year, the Festival will be held September 6th and 7th, from 10 am to 5 pm. The eclectic Five Points area provides a vibrant gateway for those attending the festival, which features watercolors, oils, glass, pastels, drawings, clay, photography, wood, acrylics, fiber, graphics, metal, paper and mixed media, as well as a terrific Art Activities tent for kids. There is always plenty of food, fun, and music to accompany the art, and the highly regarded (and free!) guided bus tours of the district are not to be missed.

Jackie Chan awarded honorary professorship from Savannah College of Art and Design

The United States’ premier art and design university honors one of Asia’s most prestigious businessmen for his global contributions to art and culture
HONG KONG — Jackie Chan will receive an honorary professorship from the Savannah College of Art and Design for a lifetime of excellence in the cinematic arts and for nurturing others to pursue their own artistic dreams. SCAD President and Co-founder Paula S. Wallace will name Chan as an honorary professor of performing arts at a reception in his honor Wednesday, Sept. 3, 4-6 p.m., at the Intercontinental Hotel, 18 Salisbury Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

This marks the first time the college has awarded an honorary professorship. Joining President Wallace in making the presentation to Chan will be distinguished entrepreneur and patroness of the arts Dr. Chan Laiwa of Beijing, China, who serves on SCAD’s Board of Trustees. Laiwa also holds an honorary doctorate degree from SCAD.
