Chortles and shouts. Racing feet. Sticky fingers. These sights and sounds might seem unexpected in standard house museum environments. But this summer the Jekyll Island Museum aims to engage the youngest members of the community in the wonders of the past.
So this July kids on Jekyll Island are having a hoot. Whether throwing atlatls, making butter, racing with barrel hoops, becoming stained glass artists, manning windmills, building bridges, searching for architectural wonders, or jumping on pony hops, they are discovering Jekyll Island’s historic district as an active learning environment.
Today, you might see more flags flapping in the coastal breeze. Flag Day in the United States is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that date in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
According to Wikipedia, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day In 1916. I n August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14, 1937, Michigan became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday.
The Concerts in the Plaza series, now in its 18th year, has become one of the St Augustine’s favorite annual events and is said to be the best way to spend a Thursday night in St. Augustine.
Concerts in the Plaza brings a variety of music to St. Augustine’s historic downtown all summer long – from Bluegrass and blues, jazz and country, swing and folk, to old time and popular rock. The concerts take place outdoors in the Gazebo in the historic Plaza de la Constitución.
All concerts are free of charge and those attending may wish to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating.
