Thanksgiving Parade
Thanksgiving parades, just like football, turkey and the pumpkin pie, can’t be done away with if we are talking Thanksgiving ! Elaborate parades featuring huge floats, musical extravaganza and star-studded entertainment shows on Thanksgiving are regular features of the Thanksgiving holiday and are marked by great pomp and grandeur. It has its origins in the early 20th century and is fashioned to give the festive frenzy a good lift in the hearts of young and old. The Thanksgiving parades are indeed a spectacle for whoever manages to catch sight of one ! Through years now, these street shows and parades of Thanksgiving have become a tradition and are integral to this holiday, held on the fourth Thursday in November.
Family Fun for Thanksgiving in Savannah, Georgia
Thanksgiving weekend is the time to get the whole family together and have some fun. The weekend also marks the beginning of the holiday season. Besides shopping, and of course eating, there’s a lot to do in Savannah to get into the holiday spirit on Saturday November 24th. On Saturday November 24th , start out by visiting the Southern Lights Children’s Activities. This event takes place from 3:00 – 5:00 pm on November 24th, right before the WTOC Tree Lighting Ceremony. Here you can enjoy holiday treats, arts and crafts, cookie decorating and tons of activities for kids. Then gather up your gang and head for Morrell Park for the WTOC Tree Lighting Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 5:30 pm. Enjoy holiday entertainment with singing and dancing groups, WTOC personalities and don’t miss Savannah’s own American Idol, Stephanie Edwards. The grand finale is of course the lighting of the giant Christmas Tree.

Right after the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, it’s time for the highlight show of the evening – Savannah Harbor Boat Parade of Lights. Watch as more than 40 festively decorated yachts and sailboats pass by, competing for various titles and bragging rights for their decorations. The parade is followed by fireworks over the river.
