Fourth of July Weekend in Jacksonville, Florida

Ice Skating & Family Activities all weekend

Make a family day of fun for the Fourth of July, and start already on Friday with lots of activities for the family. Come to the Veterans Memorial arena between noon and 9 p.m for arts, crafts and interactive games including: Rock Climbing Wall, Dance Dance Revolution, Inflatable Twister, Coloring Station, Game Area, Tattoo Station, Yes You Canvas! Display, Hula Hoop Station, Photo Booth, Face Painting, Bean Bag toss, Karaoke, Make Your Own Patriotic Fans, Pinwheels, Buttons, and patriotic frames.

Live music by Diggin’ in Dreamland
Kick off the weekend with an outdoor concert. Bring a picnic and your dancing shoes to the Northbank Riverfront. Diggin’ in Dreamland performs at the Northbank Riverfront Park (Pearl St. between the Times-Union Center and the CSX Building) at 7 p.m.

Saturday, July 4th

If you have younger kids, it might be an excellent idea to stop by the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena for ice skating and other fun family activities. On Saturday Radio Disney will be there for fun and games from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Freedom Ride 2009
The Freedom Ride 2009 starts at Adamec Baymeadows and ends at Metropolitan Park, so you should see a lot of cool bikes around in the area. The ride begins at 2.30 p.m

Head to the landing for a snack and a drink, and live entertainment.
The Jacksonville Landing offers an “All-American 4th” with live music from the stage.

Fourth of July Fireworks
Where to watch fireworks? Jacksonville has plenty of options but the Museum of Science and History one of the most interesting ones we’ve seen. Come to MOSH for rooftop viewing, tickets are $10 per person, but that includes both admission to the exhibits and parking, so it’s a good deal.

Fireworks on the Downtown Riverfront
Fireworks can be viewed from the Northbank and Southbank of the St. Johns River. The fireworks is scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m.

Fireworks in downtown Jacksonville will be shot from river barges behind Metropolitan Park, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront and The Jacksonville Landing along with strobes on the Main Street Bridge and the Acosta Bridge.

Going to the Ritz in Downtown Brunswick, GA

The Ritz Theater in downtown Brunswick used to be the place to go for movies. The Ritz remained on top for more than 50 years, from the earliest days of silent film up to the 70’s. This is one of those wonderful old theaters reminding you of Hollywood hay days with deep red velvet, gold and a huge silver screen.

With the arrival of the multiplex theater, cable television and home theaters, times changed for the Ritz. But now, Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association has made it possible for us to again experience an old-fashioned movie experience at the Ritz.

When GIAHA brought films back to the Ritz in 2007, the response was overwhelming. Now movies are a regular part of the programming and the Ritz is once again the Grand Old Cinema in downtown Brunswick.

Beginning in July 2009, GIAHA will again present the popular Summer Classic Movies. Escape the summer heat and experience some of the classic films the way they were meant to be seen. If you have young kids or teenagers, this event is definitely something the whole family can enjoy.

The Summer Classic Movies are shown on Thursdays at 7 pm. Tickets are only $5.00 at the door. You can also win door prizes and there’s free popcorn (first come, first served), so make sure to mark your calendar.

Dinner and a Movie
You can even make it a night on the town for the whole family without breaking the bank. Buy your ticket after 5 pm for that night’s show. Go next door to ARTE PIZZA, show them your ticket for any slice of wood-fired pizza, a salad, and a drink for only $5.95. You’ll be back at the Ritz in time for the 6:30 pm short subjects and 7 pm feature.

July 2 – The Sound of Music (1965)
Do-re-mi…  This is the event for all wanna-be singers and musical lovers. You can be a star too.  Julie Andrews will lead the audience in one  of the most popular musicals ever. The Sing-Along Sound of Music that has packed audiences for years in London, and now Brunswick is next. This film has all the familiar song we love and this time you can watch it on the big screen.  Come in costume (for extra prizes). Dress up as a nun, a lonely goatherd, a drop of golden sun (no Nazis please).

July 9 – All About Eve (1950)
This movie is the winner of six Academy Awards (including Best Picture) and nominated for eight others (including two Best Actress nods). This is one of Bette Davis’s most unforgettable roles (as mercurial, imperious Broadway star Margo Channing). It is also one of the wittiest, most entertaining inside looks at the crazy world of show business.

July 16 – Patton (1970)
Americans love a winner! Those are the words of General George S. Patton (at least according to Francis Ford Coppola’s award-winning screenplay), and audiences loved George C. Scott in his Oscar-winning role as the stubborn, controversial, larger-than-life World War II commander in this powerful screen portrait. It’s all here: the battles, the bravado, the behavior bad and good for which “Old Blood and Guts” was known, brought to amazing life by Scott’s truly remarkable performance.

July 23 – Laura (1944)
Laura is the face in the misty light, the laugh that floats on a summer night, but she’s only a dream…or is she? That’s the question at the heart of this classic 1944 film noir with a twist: the cop investigating a murder falls for the victim! Oozing with atmosphere, Otto Preminger’s “tribute to style over sanity” (according to critic Roger Ebert) takes place in the rarified, decadent world of New York high society, where just about any oily cad could be a killer. And, of course, there’s that unforgettable theme song.

July 30 – Conrack (1974)
The true story of “one beautiful man.” Based on the memoir by author Pat Conroy (Prince of Tides, The Great Santini), this inspiring drama filmed right here in the Golden Isles (worth a look just to spot familiar places) centers on Conroy’s struggles and triumphs as a teacher assigned to an isolated island off the coast of South Carolina. Martin Ritt directs with his characteristically sensitive handling of social issues, and an acclaimed cast contributes brilliant performances to this beloved 1974 film.

Fiesta Latina, 2009 – Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is turning up the heat when Fiesta Latina returns to Rousakis Plaza on Saturday June 20th.
Many of the 20 different countries that make up Latin America are represented at this event. First and foremost, there will be lots of music. Live DJ’s and bands will bring salsa, merengüe, cumbia, norteño, bachata, reggaetón and more to the river front. Featured artists include the popular “Serenata Band” from Atlanta, who visited last year, as well as many other local and regional artists. Besides music and dance, the festival also offers arts, crafts and food from different countries.

Independence Day in Fernandina Beach, Amelia Island, Florida

Stars & Stripes Freedom Festival – Fernandina, Amelia Island, FL

What better way to celebrate America’s independence than the Stars and Stripes Festival in Fernandina, Florida? The festival takes place in Amelia Island’s Central Park and begins with a patriotic parade down Centre Street at 7:00 p.m. in the historic district; followed by a barrage of fireworks to conclude the festivities.

This annual observance of America’s liberation takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. Bring the whole family to the park for lots of activities and fun. First and foremost, there’s the Touch-A-Truck Public Safety display. Here you, or your little ones, can get hands on, up close and personal look at a number of fascinating vehicles. There will be fire trucks, police cars, garbage trucks, excavators – even an 18 wheel log truck and helicopter is scheduled. The vehicles on display come from the City of Fernandina Beach Police, Fire/Rescue and Streets Departments, Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Fire/Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, Coast Guard, and more.
This event is a sure hit with the younger ones.

Other activities include a Parent-Child Look-A-Like Contest. Sign up starting at 10 a.m., the contest itself at 1:00 p.m. I thought about asking one of my teenagers to participate with me, but I’m sure the answer would be a “No Way”. So instead I had my hopes up for the All American Apple Pie Contest. It turns out that you have to bake pies, so I quickly crossed that off my list. Then there’s of course the usual stuff with Fun for the Kids playground, food, arts and crafts vendors.

Also the band FACE FOR RADIO, will perform on the Pirate Ship Stage during the festival.

Festival goers are invited to wear red, white and blue for the Stars & Stripes Freedom Festival Parade starting at 7 p.m. After the parade, everyone will gather in front of the Depot to enjoy music in the spirit of Independence Day by the community choir, the Sine Nomine Singers and the New Horizons Band of the Amelia Arts Academy.

After dark, it’s time to find a spot to watch the fireworks. The fireworks exhibition can be viewed to the south of the Fernandina Harbor Marina at approximately 9:30 p.m. A perfect close to a perfect day.

Independence Day Fireworks at the World Golf Village on July 2, 2009

Start your 4th of July celebration early this year with fireworks on Thursday July 2nd. The fireworks show is schedule to start after dark.

You can actually turn Thursday into a full-fledged Independence Day extravaganza at the World Golf Village by combining the fireworks show with dinner and a BIG movie. Enjoy an All-American buffet at Fairways café starting at 5:30pm and follow that with a special showing of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” at the IMAX theater. This has to be the absolutely best way to experience this action packed movie which we think is destined to be on of the big movies of the summer.

The package price for “Dinner and a Movie” are $35 for adults and $30 for children. The package also includes free putting on the Hall’s 18-hole putting course and two adult drink tickets.
