“Art of Cuisine” Iron Chef Challenge – Bluffton, SC

Local Chefs Compete for Top Spot at Historic Bluffton Arts and Seafood Festival On Saturday, October 24th area chefs will create mouth watering seafood dishes as part of the Iron Chef Challenge during the fifth annual Historic Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival. Each chef will be challenged to prepare two dishes in one hour using two unknown seafood and two non-seafood ingredients provided by the festival committee.

“It’s pretty amazing to see what these chefs can prepare in such a short amount of time, outdoors, underneath a tent, says Mary Connor, Chairman of this year’s Iron Chef Challenge. “We should really appreciate the tremendous talent we have right here in the Low Country.”

The competition will be held in downtown Bluffton in “Neptune’s Galley” tent located at the Carson Cottages on Calhoun Street beginning at 11:00am. At 12:00 noon the dishes will be sampled by the judging panel and the winning dishes will be determined on the basis of taste and presentation.
In 2008 the top prize, a Traeger Pellet Grill valued at $699 from O’Neill’s Outdoor Power Equipment, was awarded to Kevin Cavanaugh then of Buffalo’s at Palmetto Bluff. 2007’s Top Chef was George Davis of Hilton Head Island’s Ocean Grille. Kevin, now of Plantation Station Catering Division, is again up for the Challenge. How about you, George?

The “Art of Cuisine” Iron Chef Challenge is part of a week long celebration of Bluffton’s unique history, cuisine, art and culture taking place October 18-25. Events showcase locally harvested seafood, Lowcountry cuisine, and area and regional artists. Also included is live music, a fishing tournament, boat tours, children’s activities, fireworks and more. Festival organizers invite both locals and tourists to discover “Where Fine Art & the Bounty of the Sea Come Together.”

The World of Harry Potter comes to Universal Orlando Resort

Inspired by J.K. Rowling’s compelling stories and characters – and faithful to the visual landscapes of the films – The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal’s Islands of Adventure will provide visitors with a one-of-a-kind experience complete with multiple attractions, shops and a signature eating establishment. This completely immersive environment will transcend generations and bring the wonder and magic of the amazingly detailed Harry Potter books and films to life.

The expectations of Harry Potter fans are high and Universal Orlando Resort is collaborating closely with J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros. Consumer Products and the Warner Bros. Harry Potter brand team to ensure that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be an experience of a lifetime. The Harry Potter films’ production designer, Stuart Craig and art director, Alan Gilmore, in cooperation with a corps of artisans from Universal Creative are working daily to construct the most authentic Harry Potter experience possible. Guests will be able to sip Butterbeer in Three Broomsticks, buy Extendable Ears at Zonko’s and experience a state-of-the-art attraction that brings the stories of Harry Potter to life in a way never before imagined.

From the front archway of Hogsmeade to the immensity of Hogwarts castle, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter will feature the locations listed below:
* At the entrance of Hogsmeade, billowing steam and an iconic whistle signal the arrival of the Hogwarts Express into Hogsmeade station
* Across the way is Zonko’s, a joke shop with a collection of tricks and jokes, including Extendable Ears, Boxing Telescopes and Sneakoscopes
* Honeydukes is next door and full of treats like Chocolate Frogs and Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans
* The Three Broomsticks and adjacent Hog’s Head pub will feature traditional British fare and drinks including Butterbeer and pumpkin juice
* Across from the Three Broomsticks is The Owlery, where owls roost and await their next delivery
* The Owl Post sends letters with a certified Hogsmeade postmark and sells official stamps from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
* Ollivanders wand shop is an incredible interactive experience where the wand chooses the wizard
* Completing Hogsmeade is Dervish and Banges, the magical instruments and equipment shop featuring Quidditch equipment, Triwizard apparel, Spectrespecs and Remembralls
* The first attraction, Dragon Challenge, features a twin high-speed roller coaster with many iconic elements from the Triwizard Tournament
* Next is Flight of the Hippogriff, a family coaster simulating a Hippogriff training flight over the grounds of Hogwarts castle
* Located in Hogwarts castle, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a thrilling new state-of-the-art attraction that uses entirely new technology to bring the magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in ways never before experienced
o Before exiting back into Hogsmeade, Filch’s Emporium of Confiscated Goods is full of Ministry of Magic and magical creatures merchandise, Omnioculars, and even remote control Golden Snitches

Taste of Charleston, 2009

The 29th annual Taste of Charleston is scheduled for October 9-11, 2009.
The three-day celebration of Lowcountry cuisine features some of Charleston’s best chefs. There are three special events leading up to the main event at Boone Hall Plantation.

• Taste – Iron Chef Competition takes place on Friday, October 9, at the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s (CIC) Palmer Campus in downtown Charleston. This event features a head-to-head battle between local chefs in CIC’s state-of-the-art amphitheater kitchen.

• Taste of the Kitchen is held on Saturday, October 10, at the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s Palmer Campus in downtown Charleston. Celebrity chefs take the stage to show how chefs do it, also CIC chefs will take participants in the kitchens to cook hands-on. Add wine and beer classes and a Taste of the CIC buffet lunch for a full plate.

• Taste of the Arts will be held on Saturday evening, October 10, at various art galleries in downtown Charleston. This event combines Lowcountry art with the culinary arts by showcase the talents of local artists while offering guests a sampling of appetizers from Charleston restaurants.

• Taste of Charleston (Main Event) will be held on Sunday, October 11, at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. Here you’ll find a sampling of tempting food served at more than 40 of Charleston’s finest restaurants. Additional highlights; the legendary Waiter’s Wine Race, food and wine pairings, specialty and imported beers, cooking demonstrations, the Best of the Taste contest, live bands o (complete with a petting zoo).

For more than 20 years, this event has been named one of the “top 20 events in the southeast” by Southeastern Tourism Society. More than 9,000 guests are expected, so come early and plan to stay. For more information, click here

Pirate Fest – Tybee Island, Georgia

Did you participate in “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 19th, or did you receive some strange emails or voice mails? There is actually a special day to speak pirate, and they even have their own website for it – www.talklikeapirate.com.
But if you missed out on all the fun, here is your chance to act like a pirate.

Tybee Island LighthousePirates will invade Tybee Island, Georgia, when one of the most popular events, The 5th Annual Tybee Island Fest, takes place October 8 – 10, 2009. The party has grown this year with multiple concerts, fireworks, “Buccaneer Ball”, Thieves market, Pirate Victory Parade and Kid’s Zone.

The celebration kicks off already on Thursday October 8, at the Crab Shack, where the Pirate Fest King and Queen will be crowned. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 a the door.

On Friday, the pirate invasion begins near the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. All pirates can party and dance to music from Roy and the Circuit Breakers and The Train Wrecks. The Thieves Market is open where you can find treasures of all kinds. The Little Matey’s Cove is filled with activities for the younger crowd. Then at 7.30 pm thundering cannons will mark the beginning of the fireworks extravaganza. Later The Eric Culberson Blues Band and Big Engine will take the stage.

The fun continues at South Beach on Saturday morning, and then at 3 p.m. the pirates and their buccaneers will gather for the big Pirate Victory Parade down Butler Avenue. Along the way, the pirates will share their treasures of trinkets and doubloons with the crowd. There’s live music all day and at 9 p.m., the world famous Marshall Tucker Band will take the stage.

Fall Tour of Homes and Gardens – Charleston, SC

The 33rd Annual Fall Tours of Homes & Gardens in Charleston, SC, feature beautiful gardens and architecturally significant homes, churches and public buildings. The tours highlights the very best of American architecture from the early Georgian Period up to and including the 21st century. Each tour features a unique neighborhood representing Charleston’s culture from the Colonial era to the present. The tours take place from September 24- October 25, 2009.

Most of the properties are privately owned and are open to the public exclusively for the Annual Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens. Volunteer guides will interpret the history, architecture and decorative arts of each property.

The tours take place on Thursday and Friday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. All tours are self-paced walking tours held on the peninsula of Charleston within the city’s various historic neighborhoods.

The Fall Tours of Homes and Gardens is the Preservation Society’s annual fund raising event. Tickets are $45.00 per person, per tour and may be purchased only through the Preservation Society of Charleston online at www.preservationsociety.org or by calling (843)722-4630.
