4th of July Blast at Patriots Point, Charleston
One of the best places to watch fireworks and celebrate Independence Day has to be Patriots Point in Charleston.

Fourth of July South CarolinaFirst, during the day there is a action-filled festival with live music, a kids Zone, a beverage garden with both soda and adult libations, and a food village. Admission to the actual land festival is free, but there is admission fee to the ships, Medal of Honor Museum and exhibits.

The fireworks display is one of the bests in the country. Fireworks begin at 10:05 PM. The fireworks show has been calledd “Top 5 Independence Day Celebrations” by the New York Times. Fireworks is set to patriotic music and launched from the deck of the U.S.S. Yorktown with the Charleston Harbor as a backdrop.

Middleton Place Celebrates Independence Day Weekend – Charleston, SC
Remember exactly why we’re celebrating Independence Day, and learn more about how it all started with a real Independence Day celebration at Middleton Place. Take a step back in time, hear the fife and drums and smell the gun powder at the home of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Here you can walk through an 18th century military camp with re-enactors and experience up close and personal how the troops lived. There will also be cooking and musket firing demonstrations, and ceremonies commemorating the contributions of Arthur and Henry Middleton.
At 3:00 pm the Declaration of Independence is read.

Maybe you’re looking for something a little bit more exotic than your common picnic, barbeque, parade and firework combo, and I have found a great little event for you. Take the whole family to a Luau at Cypress Gardens on Independence Day for a big birthday bash called “Luau in the Swamp”.

Wait, it’s not as odd as it sounds.

Fourth of July Party in South Carolina 2009This is the year the state of Hawaii is officially “over the hill” – or to put it in plain English; it’s Hawaii’s 50th anniversary of statehood. So Cypress Gardens is putting on a big party on the 4th of July and everyone is invited. If you and your family want to experience a little bit of Hawaii in South Carolina, just head out to Cypress Gardens. It’s a whole lot cheaper than flying to Hawaii.

As expected, hula dancers and ukulele band will be a part of the entertainment lineup. Everyone is invited to enter the limbo and the Hawaiin costume contest. The kids will love it, and I’m afraid my wife won’t be able to resist either. In that case, it’ll be one of those events one will be glad to forget, but the kids will remember for ever.

You’re also invited to bring your own ice cream churn and enter the ice cream contest. I can see it clearly now. I’ll be forced to wear a Hawaiian shirt with pink flowers and parrots and carry an ice cream churn under one arm, and under the other, a wife dressed in a hula outfit ready to limbo.

What can I say…oh poi!

I was encouraged to hear that The Supporters of Historical Cypress Garden will roast a pig, because I know that will be delicious. There will also be other island food available, and for the less adventurous among us the American staple of hot dogs and hamburgers.

Savannah Swings!

This event has become a yearly tradition in Savannah, and no wonder. It’s definitely very special way to celebrate the 4th of July. Just listen to this.

First, start out with a delicious picnic catered by the First City Club in Reynolds Square. There is really no better way to get a feel for the first city than by spending time in the squares, and why not a picnic. It is after all Fourth of July.

After the picnic, it’s time to head inside the cool Lucas Theater. This time of year, heading inside, can be a great way to cool off. Now you’re going to experience a cool jazz concert with “Jeremy Davis and the Fabulous Equinox Jazz Orchestra” with singers Clay Johnson, Adam Jones, Trae Gurley and Huxsie Scott and Special Guest Kim Polote.
Don’t get too relaxed, because then it’s time to move to the beat, this time we’re following the band’s lead. We’re follwing the musicians in a New Orleans-style procession from the front of the Lucas, down the Abercorn ramp, all the way down to River Street. Here it’s time to sit again. This is where you’ll find the best seat in the town for fireworks viewing right on the river. Savannah swings!

Tickets for the concert, parade and seats are $25 for adults, and $10 children 12 and under. There is a $5 discount for military, fire & police.

Tickets for the picnic are available for an additional $20 for adults, $15 for children 12 and under.

The picnic is 3.30 – 5.oo pm and the concert starts at 6 p.m. at the Lucas Theatre.

Where to watch fireworks? Jacksonville has plenty of options but the Museum of Science and History one of the most interesting ones we’ve seen. Come to MOSH for rooftop viewing, tickets are $10 per person, but that includes both admission to the exhibits and parking, so it’s a good deal.

Fireworks on the Downtown Riverfront
Fireworks can be viewed from the Northbank and Southbank of the St. Johns River. The fireworks is scheduled to begin at 9:45 p.m.

Fireworks in downtown Jacksonville will be shot from river barges behind Metropolitan Park, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront and The Jacksonville Landing along with strobes on the Main Street Bridge and the Acosta Bridge.

Greek Landing Day Celebration in St Augustine, 2009

On June 26th, 1768 nearly 500 Greek colonists arrived to St. Augustine, Florida, with the Thurnbull expedition. This arrival eventually lead to the first colony of Greeks in North America. Every year this event is celebrated at at the St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine, and this year the 23rd annual celebration takes place Thursday June 25th – Saturday June 27th, 2009.

Thursday June 25th
The three day long celebration begins on Thursday at 5.30pm with an opening reception for the exhibit Steven Papadatos: A Retrospective of One Man’s 40-year Career.

Friday June 26th
Shrine Chaplain, Father Nikitas Theodosion will celebrate the services of Matins, Divine Liturgy and the colonists’ memorial Friday, June 26 at 9:00 am in the St Photios Chapel. St. Augustine Mayor Joseph Bolles will read the 2009 Greek Landing Day City Proclamation and Victoria Pitenis of Daytona Beach will read her award winning essay, St. Photios Shrine. Refreshments will be served.

Liz Lazarides White will lecture on Greek cooking class at 4:00 p.m. at the Shrine. Her cookbook Opa! will be available for purchase. Liz and her husband Ed will also be available at the Saturday Glendi.

Saturday June 26th
Bring their children for the 9:00 a.m. Colonial Spanish Quarter Scavenger Hunt, followed by tie dying! Later it’s time for a greek party. Enjoy festive Greek music and food at the annual glendi (party). Here you can try delicious Greek pastries and other food. The glendi will be held in the Constantine Sisters Courtyard Saturday, June 27, 10-3:00 p.m.

4th of July Blast at Patriots Point in Charleston, South Carolina

The stories of glory and triumph that shaped our country really come to life at Patriots Point in Charleston. This is even more so on the 4th of July.

Every year the 4th of July Blast draws a huge crowd to Patriots Point on the Mount Pleasant side of Charleston Harbor. Last year 27,500 people attended the event, and this year the organizers hope to break that record.

The 13th Annual Fourth of July Blast is hosted by Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum and the Town of Mount Pleasant and the event is the ultimate 4th of July celebration.

USS YORKTOWN
patriotspoint-thThe festivities include a fireworks display launched from the flight deck of the USS YORKTOWN, a World War II-era aircraft carrier. The USS YORKTOWN saw action in the battles of the Philippine Sea and Iwo Jima, now it is an attraction belonging to the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum.

During the event, make sure to visit the USS YORKTOWN. Tickets are only $5 after 5 PM (for those over the age of 5). On board the ship you’ll meet veterans from the WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq Wars who will share their stories.

The festival on the landside at Patriots Point takes place from 4 PM to Midnight with lots of activities for the whole family. There will be live music on two stages; a ‘Kidz Zone’ play area featuring eight attractions, including an 83-foot inflatable replica of an aircraft carrier.

Fireworks & Music
An Independence Day celebration would not be complete without fireworks, and the 4th of July Blast has an absolutely spectacular firework show. Fireworks begin at 10:05 PM. The fireworks show is set to patriotic music and has been named “Top 5 Independence Day Celebrations” by the New York Times. Fireworks are launched from the deck of the
U.S.S. Yorktown with the Charleston Harbor as a backdrop. It’s hard to top that.

This year’s event will also honor a very special Unit stationed in Taji, Iraq. Three of Charleston’s own belong to the Unit and they are scheduled to remain in Iraq until September. Festival attendees can record a personal message that will be sent over to the 856th Engineer Company in a special Independence Day care package.
