The 500th Anniversary of Palladio’s Birth – Charleston, SC

October 30, 2008 by etalentino

If you have an interest in architecture and history, this is a perfect event for you. This is a special two-day event celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio whose work influenced the design of Charleston’s Drayton Hall.

It all begins on Thursday, November 6th, at the American Theater in downtown Charleston with a lecture by preservation architect and Palladio scholar Alexandra di Valmarana. A light reception will follow.

Thursday’s event is free, but reservations are required. Then on Friday, learn more about the Palladian connection through a special exhibit of never-before-seen Drayton-family architectural drawings dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. Director of Preservation Matt Webster will lead guests through this exhibit and draw comparisons between architectural pattern books, including Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture, Drayton Hall’s architecture, and the family’s own architectural drawings. The exhibit will be followed by cocktails on the portico and a plantation luncheon under the tent.

Tickets to Friday’s event are $75 each. Proceeds will go directly toward preservation of Drayton Hall’s main house. For more information, please call Courtney Bates at 843-769-2612 or email her at courtney_bates@draytonhall.org

Seen by many as the premier fine art festival in Charleston, the Fine Art Annual gives visitors the chance to mingle with well-known artists in charming historic downtown Charleston.

Proceeds will benefit Charleston County High Schools’ fine art programs. Last year’s event raised $27,000 for high school art programs.

The fine art weekend kicks off on Friday, November 7 at 5:00 p.m. with gallery openings at CFADA member galleries. On Saturday morning, November 8 starting at 9:00 a.m., you get the unique opportunity to watch artists at work as they donate their time and talent to create masterpieces that will be later auctioned off to benefit the Charleston County High Schools’ art programs. The plein air event, Painting in the Park, traditionally takes place at Washington Park from 9:00 a.m. till noon.

The Fifth Annual High School Art Competition, a platform for young talented artists to showcase their unique works, is part of the plein air event and will start at 11:00 a.m. at Washington Park.
