The Readers’ Theatre presents New Plays

In the month of February a new program kicks off to introduce new playwrights to the community in Savannah. The new monthly recurring program is called Readers’ Theatre and takes place on the third Saturday of every month from 1.00 pm to 3.30 pm at S.P.A.C.E in Savannah. During the event a reading of a new play will take place followed by a discussion. The Readers’ Theatre is a free event open to the public.

On Saturday February 21st, a play by Ina Williams called The McCullogh Boys will be read. Writers interested in future readings are welcome to submit their plays.

Scripts must be submitted one month prior to the date for which they will be considered.  Interested writers should email scripts to Ellie Pyle, Performing Arts Coordinator, at Elizabeth_pyle@savannahga.gov or call (912) 651-6783 for information.  Individuals who would like to volunteer as readers should email a resume, headshot and availability to Pyle.

Georgia Day Parade in Savannah

On Thursday, February 12th, the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah organizes the Georgia Day parade. This colorful parade is a yearly tradition in Savannah. Customed characters, dignitaries, local citizens and thousands of elementary school students join the parade through the squares of Bull Street.
The parade starts at 10:30 am from Forsyth Park and then it continues all the way to city hall where the participants will be greated by the Mayor.

The parade is part of the celebration of Georgia Days. Georgia Historical Society commemorates the rich history of the state of Georgia with a celebration lasting for a whole month. For more information visit www.georgiahistory.com

High Tide Ultimate for Spring Break – Golden Isles, Georgia

During spring break you’ll be able to see flying objects on Jekyll Island, but these object can easily be identified. Jekyll Island will receive 160 teams and 2500 students competing in High Tide Ultimate.

In the beginning this sport was called Ultimate Frisbee, but has now been renamed Ultimate. High Tide Ultimate is the south’s largest college ultimate tournament and will take over the recreation fields on Jekyll and in Glynn County.

The game is similar to American football or rugby but played with a 175 gram flying disc. The tournament will take both at Jekyll Island Soccer complex and North Glynn Recreational Fields. The event will generate over 3000 hotel room nights and is expected to generate over $1.25 million in economic impact.

Super Sunday at the Museum

Right after Superbowl Sunday comes another Super Sunday. On February 8 it’s time for one of Savannah’s most popular events – Super Museum Sunday. On this special day you can take your whole gang to participating museums and historic sites in Savannah without paying admission. The event begins at noon to four pm absolutely free.

Super Museum Sunday is part of Georgia Historical Society’s “Georgia Days”, which is an event lasting for the whole month celebrationg Georgia history. For a list of participating museums and venues, click here.

When idealistic author Leslie Braverman, 41, dies suddenly from a heart attack, his four best friends decide to attend his funeral together. The centerpiece of this almost forgotten classic comedy is a discussion about philosophical observations of death relative to the merits of a classic comic book.

Toots

Toots Shor was a well known saloonkeeper in New York from 1940 to 1959, and his midtown Manhattan bar was the place to be seen. His granddaughter, documentary filmmaker Kristi Jacobson, takes us on tour of her famous grandfather’s world.

Song of David

A sixteen year old soul-searching yeshiva student is studying to become a rabbi. Alienated by social boundaries, he reaches out to the broader world. He becomes obsessed with hip-hop music, wherein he discovers artistic freedom and honest self expression. He then must choose between diverging worlds.

Famous American Jewish film director Paul Mazursky follows an annual Chassidic pilgrimage to Uman, Ukraine on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, for his first documentary. Mazursky, a proclaimed secular Jew, wants to understand why so many people feel connected to Uman and returns with this humorous examination of a “journey to Jewish joy.”

Who knew there was such a thing as a rapid-response kitchen koshering service? This short documentary follows a day in the life of Rabbi Sholtiel Lebovic as he helps NYC clients go kosher from scratch as he arrives at the scene with his energetic team.
