Savannah Record and Zine Fair

The Savannah College of Art and Design’s SCAD Radio and District present the third annual “Savannah Record and Zine Fair” on Oct. 24, 2009, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. “For one day, we are happy to provide students and community members with a chance to dig through the crates and find cool music,” said Caila Brown, SCAD Radio general manager. “It will be a big day for collectors. We are also excited about bringing in the Zine Fair this year, as that event has been successful in the past. We anticipate a nice mix of people looking for music and folks who are into independent publishing.”

Dealers from around the Southeast will offer vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and music memorabilia. This year, the record fair has expanded to include comics, “‘zines” and other independent publications. Vendor tables are available for $35 for the general public, $15 for SCAD staff, faculty and alumni, and free for SCAD students. Admission is free and open to the public. 12th Annual Savannah Film Festival Gala and Special Guests

Savannah, GA—The 12th annual Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, will take place from Saturday, October 31-Saturday, November 7.

Films to receive special gala screenings will include Jean-Marc Vallée’s “The Young Victoria”; Oren Moverman’s “The Messenger,” with Moverman and stars Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster in attendance; Grant Heslov’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats”; Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces”; Lone Sherfig’s “An Education”; the United States premieres of James Ivory’s “The City of Your Final Destination,” with Ivory in attendance, and Nick Moran’s “Telstar,” with Moran and star Con O’Neill in attendance; Jodie Markell’s “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond” (from a screenplay by Tennessee Williams); Cannes Palme d’Or winner Michael Haneke’s “The White Ribbon”; and Lee Daniels’ “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” winner of the Grand-Jury Prize at Sundance and the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival. Daniels and star Gabourey Sidibe will be in attendance.

Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson (“Pieces of April,” “Vicki Cristina Barcelona”) will receive an Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award after a screening of Woody Allen’s “Whatever Works”. Emmy and Academy Award nominee Woody Harrelson (“Cheers,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt”) and Ben Foster (“3:10 to Yuma”) will also receive Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Awards prior to their screening of “The Messenger.” Emmy Rossum (“The Phantom of the Opera”) will receive the Young Hollywood Award prior to a screening of her film “Dare,” and Jeremy Renner will receive the Spotlight Award for his performance in “The Hurt Locker,” which will also screen at the festival. Scott Caan (“Ocean’s 11”), the writer and star of “Mercy,” one of the festival’s competition films, also will attend.

Past festival guests and honorees include Peter O’Toole, Michael Douglas, Jane Fonda, Sidney Lumet, Kathleen Turner, Norman Jewison, Tommy Lee Jones, John Waters, David Benioff, John Sayles, Brett Ratner, Charlie Rose, George Segal, James Franco, James Ivory, Jeff Daniels, Alec Baldwin, Peter Bart, Army Archerd, Roger Ebert, Terrence Malick, Sydney Pollack, the Redgrave siblings—Vanessa, Lynn and Corin—Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Malcolm McDowell and Milos Forman, among others.

In addition to the special screenings, the festival will showcase 22 professional films (features, documentaries, shorts and animation) and 12 student films in competition. The jurors for the competition are actress Patti D’Arbanville (“Rescue Me”), actress/producer Rita Gam, writer/director Ingrid Rockefeller, writer/director Michael Sucsy (Emmy-Award winning “Grey Gardens”) and writer/director David Twohy (“Pitch Black”).

SCAD presents third annual Art Materials Trade Show

The Savannah College of Art and Design will hold its third annual Art Materials Trade Show Oct 1 – 3, 2009, highlighting demonstrations and lectures from leading industry professionals at the River Club, 3 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Oct. 1, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Oct. 2, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Oct. 3, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

The public is invited to attend free demonstrations taught by exhibitors, which are open to all ages and skill levels. The workshops will focus on different disciplines and media and will be held outside the River Club all three days.

The Art Materials Trade Show will host more than 50 exhibitors, including SCAD alumni Lance Main, owner of Occhuzzie Paint Company, and James P. Sulkowski, owner of MasterPanels. The exhibitors will demonstrate their custom-made art materials, all of which will be available for purchase at a discounted rate during the three-day event.

The Art Materials Trade Show Seminar Series will feature free lectures from Mark Golden, CEO and founder of Golden Acrylics; David Pyle, author of “What Every Artist Needs to Know About Paints and Colors”; Scott Gellatly, project manager for Gamblin Artists’ Colors Co.; and Michael Skalka, conservation administrator at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Topics will include safety and testing, research and development, archival nature of art and design materials, and up-to-the-minute changes in art and design.

Student roundtable discussions will be during the trade show in order to bring independent artists and professionals in the art and design materials industries together with students to talk candidly about the “real world” of art. Roundtables will be held at the Student Center, 120 Montgomery St.

The Arts Materials Trade Show events are coordinated by the SCAD School of Foundation Studies to fund student scholarships. The trade show exhibition hall and lectures are free and open to the public.

Pirate Fest – Tybee Island, Georgia

Did you participate in “Talk Like a Pirate Day” on September 19th, or did you receive some strange emails or voice mails? There is actually a special day to speak pirate, and they even have their own website for it – www.talklikeapirate.com.
But if you missed out on all the fun, here is your chance to act like a pirate.

Tybee Island LighthousePirates will invade Tybee Island, Georgia, when one of the most popular events, The 5th Annual Tybee Island Fest, takes place October 8 – 10, 2009. The party has grown this year with multiple concerts, fireworks, “Buccaneer Ball”, Thieves market, Pirate Victory Parade and Kid’s Zone.

The celebration kicks off already on Thursday October 8, at the Crab Shack, where the Pirate Fest King and Queen will be crowned. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 a the door.

On Friday, the pirate invasion begins near the Tybee Pier and Pavilion. All pirates can party and dance to music from Roy and the Circuit Breakers and The Train Wrecks. The Thieves Market is open where you can find treasures of all kinds. The Little Matey’s Cove is filled with activities for the younger crowd. Then at 7.30 pm thundering cannons will mark the beginning of the fireworks extravaganza. Later The Eric Culberson Blues Band and Big Engine will take the stage.

The fun continues at South Beach on Saturday morning, and then at 3 p.m. the pirates and their buccaneers will gather for the big Pirate Victory Parade down Butler Avenue. Along the way, the pirates will share their treasures of trinkets and doubloons with the crowd. There’s live music all day and at 9 p.m., the world famous Marshall Tucker Band will take the stage.

Tickets to Pirate Fest are $10 for 2-day weekend admission to the festival area and children 12 & under are free. Visit www.tybeepiratefest.com to purchase advance tickets.
