Celebrate Historic Preservation Month at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel – Georgia

The Jekyll Island Club Hotel and the National Trust for Historic Preservation is celebrating Historic Preservation Month in May.The Hotel plans a guided Open House Tour of the major buildings with commentary about the architecture and many memorable events that have occurred here.
Open in 1888 as an exclusive hunting club for the nation’s most prominent financiers and industrialists, the Jekyll Island Club continues to have a unique history and yet one that affects all of us to this day. The guide will relate the story from the earliest days through 2008.
Visit Glynn County’s National Historic Landmark, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel. The guide takes you on a tour of the Hall of Mirrors, the Grand Dining Room, Crane Cottage and more as she comments about the Club’s history and architecture. A reception follows the tour. Meet in Palm Court

Civil War Encampment – Jekyll Island, Georgia

Visit military living history re-enactors with the Armory Guards as they recreate a Civil War encampment near where the original military units once set up their quarters. Throughout the course of the demonstration, the Armory Guards intend to accurately and respectfully portray the experience of the common American Civil War infantry soldier in Georgia.

Come discover more about Civil War soldiers at the Horton House Historic Site from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm this Saturday, May 3 and from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm this Sunday, May 4, 2008.

Discuss battle tactics with the soldiers at camp. Watch them practice their drills and march along with them. Witness them mount guard, fire muskets, and patrol the camp.

Historic Weapons Firing – St Augustine, Florida

Take the National Park Service’s ferry to Rattlesnake Island and experience daily military life at Fort Matanzas – the 18th century Spanish fort that guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine. From 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., authentically clad re-enactors will demonstrate Spanish muskets and cannons at the fort.

Hands-on Rice Planting at Middleton Place – Charleston, S.C.

Join a costumed interpreter as he describes how Carolina Gold rice was planted on Low
Country plantations, and learn about the African origins of rice and its cultivation in South Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries. Participants, if they desire, may get down and dirty in the demonstration rice field and assist with the planting!
