Charleston Harbor Fest 2008 – Charleston, S.C.

April 25, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

In 2002, a few wooden boat enthusiasts at the South Carolina Maritime Foundation decided to create an event to highlight Charleston’s rich maritime history and bring folks to the waterfront. The success of this event has blossomed over the last five years into an annual, harbor-wide celebration of the sea. What in past years was called the Charleston Maritime Festival has now been renamed to reflect the increased scope of attractions and the expansion of the festival grounds. Charleston HarborFest will be held May 16-May 18, 2008.

The Charleston Maritime Center will serve as the hub to this three-day extravaganza, with activities and attractions stretching north to Liberty Square, south to the Passenger Terminal at the foot of Market Street, and west into Ansonborough Field (depending on construction schedules). As evidence that this event will truly permeate the harbor, plans are being developed for additional attractions across the Cooper River in Mt. Pleasant as well as on the water between the two municipalities.

From Seeds to Shillings: Growing Wealth at Charles Towne – Charleston, S.C.

April 24, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

Before cotton was king and rice reigned supreme, South Carolina colonists struggled to find a cash crop that would provide them with a life of luxury. Colonists experimented with a variety of plants for both produce and profit. Join us at Charles Town Landing for “From Seeds to Shillings: Growing Wealth at Charles Towne”. See costumed interpreters working in the crop garden and ask them what they are growing. Learn how colonial crops were used as medicines, fragrances, and dyes. Talk to the apothecary about health and healing. Experience colonial colors and fragrances as you participate in indigo dying and in making your own sweetbag, a colonial form of perfume. Visit the communal lodging house to see what’s on the menu and watch how an indentured servant would have cooked meals over an open hearth.

Meeting Place: Fortified area. What to Bring: Water, appropiate clothing for weather. Event Hours: 9:00 to 5:00. Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site
