Crazy Quilts – Charleston, South Carolina

December 7, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

As part of an ongoing rotation of quilts from its permanent textile collection, The Charleston Museum will showcase the “craziest” quilts in the collection. From December 5, 2009 to March 28, 2010, visitors will have the chance to view twelve “crazy quilts,” a style popular during the last three decades of the 19th century.

Crazy quilts are characterized by the use of lavish fabrics such as velvets, satins, and silks, as well as commemorative pieces, symbols, and needlework embellishments.

“Crazy quilts were not unlike modern day scrapbooks,” notes curator of textiles Jan Hiester. “They were highly personalized, marked special moments in the maker’s life, and preserved memories.”

Crazy quilts were comprised of an array of colors, elaborate embroidery, and were usually fairly small and decorative rather than functional. Oddly shaped scraps sewn to a foundation fabric with diverse stitches are the basics of crazy quilt manufacture. The random, irregular shapes throughout the quilts are “crazed” to resemble
cracked ice and crackled Japanese and Chinese ceramics popular with Victorians. Crazy quilts were also known as kaleidoscope and Japanese patchwork.

For more information about the Crazy Quilt exhibit, please visit www.charlestonmuseum.org or call 722-2996.

The Charleston Museum will offer special programming in conjunction with the crazy quilt exhibit. Quilters and non-quilters alike can explore the basics of crazy quilting with Museum staff during a one-day workshop. For a twist on crazy quilting, the Museum will partner with Blue Heron Glass once again for a fused glass workshop. Program details will be available at the beginning of the year. Please visit www.charlestonmuseum.org for more information.

British Nightwatch and Grande Illumination – St Augustine, Florida

November 30, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

St. Augustine’s British heritage will be celebrated in grand style on December 4 and 5 when British Night Watch and Grande Illumination return to the Oldest City. One of the most colorful and exciting events of the holiday season, the 35th annual presentation of Grande Illumination and British Night Watch will feature an entertaining and educational blend of pageantry and authentic historical presentations describing life in St. Augustine when it was part of the British Empire (1763-1784).

This year, the fun gets underway Friday, December 4 at 8 p.m. with a free concert featuring traditional Celtic music performed by Father, Son and Friends at the Colonial Spanish Quarter Museum’s Taberna del Gallo on St. George Street. Sangria, cider and ale mixed with boisterous singing by authentically-garbed re-enactors will create just the sort of jocularity needed to ease the pain of the recent loss of the American colonies. Admission is free.

Saturday’s events include a British encampment from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Colonial Spanish Quarter. The encampment will feature a 9 a.m. performance of fife and drum music and the raising of the King’s Colors. A master musician will entertain at 10:30 a.m. followed by fife and drum music at 11 a.m. At 12:45 p.m., a fashion parade featuring the latest fashions from 1782 will take center stage at the encampment. At 2 p.m., special British military demonstrations will take place at the Castillo de San Marcos. At 4 p.m., the public is invited to attend an “afternoon of musik and country dance” at the Flagler Foundation Garden on the corner of St. George and Hypolita Streets

At 7:30 p.m., the British troops, their Native American allies and camp followers will assemble to the beating of drums and the music of fifes at the De Mesa House on St. George Street. At 8 p.m., this colorful contingent will parade by torchlight to Government House where they will hear a holiday proclamation from the governor before embarking on a festive march through the historic district. The public will be invited to light a candle and join in the boisterous parade through the town. A musketry volley of joy, singing of carols and general revelry by everyone involved will add to the holiday spirit.

All of the events associated with Grande Illumination and British Night Watch are open to the public and admission is free. The events are supported by a grant from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council. For more information, call 904.829.5318 or visit www.britishnightwatch.org.

The Battle of Secessionville – Charleston, SC

November 13, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

The Re-enactment of The Battle of Secessionville is the focal point of Living History Weekend every November at Boone Hall Plantation. Hundreds of re-enactors help bring the battle alive that occurred 145 years ago — on June 16, 1862. Confederate soldiers at Fort Lamar on James Island kept Charleston from being seized by Union forces and despite being outnumbered by Union soldiers by more than 2-to-1, Confederate forces were able to prevail. The win marked the last time the Federal Army would attempt to capture Charleston by land.

The name Secessionville did not come from the secession of South Carolina, but for an earlier attempt of some plantation owners to rebel.

The re-enactment, serves to remind visitors about this pivotal battle and to honor the lives lost. Proceeds from the battle re-enactment go to preservation efforts for the H.L. Hunley submarine and other projects initiated by the Confederate Heritage Trust.

Living History Weekend is also known as a fun and educational experience for families as Boone Hall Plantation is transformed into the color and lifestyle of the antebellum era.

History of Savannah’s Eastside

October 8, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

Dust Off Your Memories for the World to See
City asks citizens to lend images for planned history of Savannah’s Eastside

An interest in preserving the voices and the sights of the past have prompted the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) to put together a pictorial history of the Savannah’s Eastside.

A March 2011 release date is planned for the yet to be named coffee table book which will focus on the evolution of several Eastside neighborhoods – Twickenham, Hillcrest, Savannah Gardens, East Savannah, and Pine Gardens. The history will feature resident recollections and images right along with facts and images culled from regional and local repositories.

“Right now, there are images of ‘disappeared Savannah’ that reside in the collections Savannah’s residents,” said Michelle Hunter, project manager. “By lending their images, the public can play an important role in preserving those forgotten places, events, and times for generations to come.”

Currently, the City is seeking images of the following sites, events, or organizations:

· Area Businesses: Images of the interiors and exteriors of businesses on the Pennsylvania Avenue Corridor;

· Area Schools: Images of teachers and/or students interacting during class sessions or at school activities at Pennsylvania Avenue, Eli Whitney and Shuman Schools;

· Neighborhood Sports Activities: Images of teams at Morningside Baptist Church; sports teams; wrestling, ice skating, or roller skating at the Savannah Sports Arena; posters or advertisements from the Savannah Sports Arena; and classes or dance recitals at the Doris Martin School;

· Leisure Time Activities: Images of dances at the Savannah Gardens Administration Building; Golfing in East Savannah; church gatherings or activities; and neighborhood gatherings such as block or rent parties in Eastern Savannah;

· Area Housing Developments: Images of Moses Rogers Grove, Riverside, and Deptford Homes.

Individuals wishing to lend images or discuss the project should contact Michelle Hunter, Project Manager, at 525-3100 ext. 2847 or mhunter@savannahga.gov to set up an individual scanning appointment.

The photo credits of images that are reproduced in the publication will recognize the contribution of lending residents.

Since 2003, the City’s Department of Cultural Affairs has produced several neighborhood histories that educate and interpret Savannah’s cultural landscape. Recent efforts include the 2005 “Uncommon Knowledge” exhibition and the critically acclaimed “Low Land and the High Road” publication in 2008.

About Documentation Projects: Two to three years in length, Documentation Projects support preservation, create awareness, and give access to new “voices” in our community. To date, projects have served more than 39,000 persons. For more information on these projects, visit www.savannahneighborhoods.org.

‘Low Land and the High Road: Life and Community in the Hudson Hill, West Savannah and Woodville Neighborhoods,’ is one of the City of Savannah’s neighborhood documentation projects completed in 2008.
