Drake’s Raid in St. Augustine

June 4, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

English raiders attack St. Augustine, Florida.
On Saturday, June 6, English pirates lead by Sir Francis Drake will once again decende on St. Augustine in an authentic re-creation of Drake’s Raid of 1586.
On June 7, 1586, Drake’s 23 ships and 2,000 Englishmen attacked the city with cannons from Anastasia Island. The next day, they stormed through the streets and burned St. Augustine to the ground.

Drake's Raid in St Augustine FloridaCamp Life at the Fountain of Youth
The re-enactment is one of these great events when history comes alive. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visit the 16th century encampment at the Fountain of Youth Park, 11 Magnolia Avenue.
Here you have the opportunity to watch military drills and the re-enactors will also have demonstrations of camp life.

Street Fights in the Old City
In the evening at 7 p.m., the running battle will begin at the Santa Domingo redoubt on Orange Street. The battle will continue to the City Gate and then head south on St. George Street to the Plaza de la Constitucion. Spanish soldiers and St. Augustine townspeople will attempt to stop the English assault. This is a free event, so there is no admission to visit the encampment or watch the authentic re-creation of the sack of St. Augustine.

The event is funded in part by a grant from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council. For more information on the re-enactment of Drake’s Raid, call 904.829.3168.

Night at the Museum in Charleston, South Carolina

May 28, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

Ben Stiller is not the only one who can experience “Night at the Museum”. But instead of a battle at the Smithsonian it will be a “battle at Charleston Museum”. On June 5th you can participate in this real life adventure from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, if you dare.

When lights are out and the museum is empty, no joke, the whole museum comes to life.

Who knows, you might run into a band of pirates, bump into a unit of Revolutionary War soldiers, a Viking, George Washington, or even some wild animals! This event is for brave kids and adults only. We strongly recommend bringing your flash light, since it can come in handy and even double up as a weapon.

Museum curators and staff will share stories about the collections and maybe even entertain you with a tall tale or two. Visitors are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing as your favorite animal or in historical costume. I’ll have to remember to tell Joe about that, he loves dress up!

This event is not just for kids – big-kids-at-heart are welcome! Reservations required – register online or call 722-2996 x264.
Members – $10/adult, $5/child. Non-members – $20/adult, $10/child

Container Gardens and Summer Heat – Jacksonville

May 25, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

Here in the south it’s hot, and as you know, not all plants do well in our climate, especially plants in containers. Now you can get tips and tricks about what plants can do well so that you can let your inspiration flourish for your container garden.

The first Summer Garden Tour of 2009 will take place on Saturday, June 6th, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. Take a look at the Zoo’s selection of heat-busting plants to find out what plants will look the best in containers. Guests are to pre-register online at www.jacksonvillezoo.org, and meet outside the Zoo’s ticket booths at 8:45 a.m.

“Not all plants work well in containers, and not all container plants do well through our hot Florida summers,” said Bob Chabot, Director of Horticulture for Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. “Join us and we will show you what we have discovered through our experience that works well for us here at the zoo.”

The cost is $10 for Zoo members and $20 for non-members (Zoo admission is included). Pre-registration is required and tour size is limited. To register, please visit The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

Jacksonville: Report from Butterfly Festival

April 30, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

We had a great time at the Butterfly Festival. There was so much to see, so many cute animals, and some not so cute, and a whole bunch of kids joined the fun.

Take a look at this little video from the Butterfly Festival to see what the excitement at Tree Hill Nature Center was all about.
