AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. – The 2008 Wild Amelia Nature Festival, May 16-18, is an exciting and memorable way for residents and visitors to experience the wild side of Florida’s Amelia Island. The three-day festival offers something for everyone, with more than 25 seminars and outdoor experiences designed to showcase the natural beauty and wonder of the popular barrier island destination.
Volunteer for the Dolphin Project – Savannah, Georgia
The Dolphin Project needs volunteers to collect data and photograph the dorsal fins of Coastal Georgia dolphins for research. Especially needed are boats and their captains for quarterly surveys. Enjoy wonderful weekends on the water, with great people and Georgia dolphins! Required, basic 90-minute training sessions will be held at Armstrong Atlantic University in Savannah on March 8th at 9:00AM. Training is required for the next TDP survey scheduled for April 19-20th. Grand Opening of New Stingray Bay Exhibit at the Zoo – Jacksonville, Florida
Seaweed-Cutting Ceremony Set For Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m.
The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens’ newest exhibit, Stingray Bay, officially opens with a special seaweed-cutting ceremony on Saturday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m. Guests will have the opportunity to interact with the stingrays by petting and feeding them as they swim in a 17,000-gallon pool. This exciting, interactive exhibit is made possible by of the generous support from Jacksonville’s hometown supermarket Winn-Dixie.
“This is the only opportunity in Jacksonville for families to interact with stingrays,†said Dennis Pate. “Kids large and small will enjoy and learn about these sea creatures that live right off the First Coast.â€
Brookgreen Gardens Celebrates 2008 as the Year of the Frog!
Murrells Inlet, SC– Beginning on Leap Day, Friday, February 29th and lasting throughout the year, zoos and aquariums across the country will join the AZA and celebrate the Year of the Frog to promote amphibian conservation. In support of this effort Brookgreen Gardens’ Lowcountry Zoo, the only AZA accredited zoo on the coast of the Carolinas, will host a special frog program at the E. Craig Wall, Jr. Lowcountry Center on Friday, February 29th from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. “The purpose of the program is to make people aware that amphibians and frogs are declining in the wild and that there are things people can do to help them to survive,” explained Andrea DeMuth, Brookgreen’s Curator of Animals. “We will have materials to hand out about the plight of amphibians and have two aquariums, one with tree frogs and one with anoles for visitors to see.”
