Fernandina Welcomes 12 Cyclists Journeying 2,000 Miles to Promote Life

The 2008 Five Points of Life Ride, covering over 2,000 miles in a 30- day period, will make a stop in Fernandina Beach Sunday, October 26. The Ride is traveling through six southeastern states and participating in events in more than 30 cities, including Fernandina. The free community-wide event will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Fernandina Beach dock and will include entertainment, refreshments and a short program featuring individuals who have been touched by donation.

“We are so happy to have this group come to our community to help spread the word about these life-saving donations,” said local businessman and organ donor father, David Caples. “Please come and out support the riders for their personal commitment to donation and hear how transplantation has touched so many lives right here in our community.”

The team members include a donor who has given more than 50 gallons of blood, a rider whose marrow donation saved the life of a nurse in Australia, and a rider who is able to pedal a bike because she received a kidney transplant. There are 12 riders from around the country, seven of whom are from Florida.

The Riders will come to Fernandina from St. Mary’s, Ga. via the Cumberland Sound Ferry. The ferry ride is considered an extension of the Coastal Georgia Greenway, a 450-mile long bike trail through the state.

“It is exciting for us to be utilizing the Greenway for the first time and for such a meaningful endeavor. It’s also nice to have a national group of riders being exposed to our beautiful community,” said Cumberland Sound Ferry owner/operator, Kevin McCarthy.

The timeline for the day is:

1:30 – Riders arrive in St. Mary’s at Spencer House

2:30 – Riders & VIP’s depart St. Mary’s via ferry

3:30 – Ferry arrives Fernandina Beach, mingle for a short while, enjoy entertainment

4-4:30 pm – Educational program at Fernandina Beach dock

4:30 – 5pm – mingle & media interviews

The Ride, which started in Alabama October 1, is designed to raise awareness of the need for the five ways we can save lives through donation: whole blood, apheresis, marrow and blood stem cells, cord blood and organ & tissue. A group of 12 nonprofessional cyclists from across the United States, each with a personal connection to one or more of the five points, is riding from Alabama to Florida to share their messages. The Ride will end October 29 in Cedar Key, Fla.

With the support of many of the national donor organizations and the financial support of corporate sponsors, LifeSouth organized the first cross-country Five Points of Life ride in 1997. You can learn more about LifeSouth by visiting their Web site at www.lifesouth.org.

Florida Gators vs Georgia Bulldogs welcomed on Amelia Island Florida

One of college football’s Top 10 rivalries will unfold November 1 at Jacksonville’s Alltel stadium. As the University of Florida Gators take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs during the popular Football Classic, fans of both teams will return to their annual tailgate headquarters of Amelia Island.

During the weekend, Centre Street will be filled with street musicians offering patrons at the downtown shops and restaurants a special treat. Amelia Island Plantation is offering its own special fan-friendly activities. On Friday, October 31, The Spa & Shops at Amelia Island Plantation is throwing a pre-party from noon to 5 p.m., complete with complimentary beer, wine and Island Oasis frozen drinks. At 5 p.m. the party continues at the Dawg/Gator Boardwalk Bash, featuring dollar beers, live entertainment and much more. Beginning at 8 p.m., the “Frat Bash” kicks off at the Grand Pavilion. This exciting ticketed event will offer a dance party with two of America’s favorite recording acts, the legendary Tams, and The Swingin’ Medallions, “The Party Band of the South.”

World Golf Hall of Fame Prepares Special Exhibits to Honor 2008 Induction Class

St. Augustine, Fla. (October 23, 2008) – The World Golf Hall of Fame is putting the final touches on its 2008 Induction Ceremony plans which include the unveiling of exhibits that honor and celebrate the new Class of Inductees. The Inductee Exhibits will open to the public Saturday, Nov. 8 and the Induction Ceremony will take place Monday, Nov. 10.

The exhibits will feature the inspiring stories from the lives and careers of the 2008 Class: Sir Bob Charles, Pete Dye, Carol Semple Thompson, Denny Shute, Herbert Warren Wind and Craig Wood. Hundreds of artifacts, personal mementos, memorabilia and photos have been gathered over the last several months in preparation for the Induction Ceremony.

“The development of these exhibits each year is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of our new Inductees,” said Jack Peter, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Hall of Fame. “The details that surface after getting to know each Inductee, their families and friends always create an abundance of stories which we are then able to convey to our guests. The Class of 2008 will bring awe and inspiration to the guests visiting the museum this year and for years to come.”

The Claret Jug from Charles’ 1963 Open Championship victory at Royal Lytham & St. Annes will be included in his display, as will trophies representative of his more than 75 worldwide victories. The Bulls Eye Putter he used from 1990 to 2000 to earn 10 Champions Tour titles will be on display, along with his copies of books that have inspired him throughout the years, including Ben Hogan’s “Power Golf” and “This Game of Golf” by Henry Cotton. On a personal side, Charles, who has earned knight status in New Zealand, received Commander of the British Empire honor from the Queen of England in 1992 and that citation will be on display.

Representing a golf course design prowess that includes more than 100 courses around the world, Dye’s Inductee exhibit will showcase his 1995 Donald Ross award, 2003 Old Tom Morris award, and 2004 PGA Distinguished Service award, as well as his Past President’s Jacket and gavel from the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Dye’s personal, marked-up copy of Alister Mackenzie’s “Golf Architecture” book will be included, as well as his Honorary Doctorate from Purdue University and his Honorary Doctorate and Honorary golf letterman’s jacket from the University of South Carolina. Additionally, his Passport from 1986 to 1996 can be seen, showing scores of trips to the Dominican Republic, where he has designed five courses. Dye’s exhibit also will feature such personal keepsakes as a wedding photo of him and Alice, his wife of 58 years. Andy Griffith and Matlock DVDs and Mills Brothers cassettes showcase Pete’s longtime favorite TV shows and music.

Memorializing Semple Thompson’s participation in more than 100 individual USGA championships—the first golfer to do so—will be 63 contestant badges spanning various events over several decades, plus the seven gold medals from her seven USGA championships. There will be several items on display to mark Semple Thompson’s close and successful association with the Curtis Cup, including the ball she used in 2002 to make a 27-foot birdie putt to earn the Curtis Cup-retaining point for the U.S. Team. Her 2005 PGA First Lady of Golf Award will be on view, alongside letters of congratulations from First Lady Laura Bush, Hall of Fame member Judy Bell and Alice Dye. On a personal note, a black riding hat with stock will be included, recognizing her lifetime fondness of horseback riding.

In what may be the most comprehensive collection of Shute artifacts ever assembled, the exhibit will include his winner’s trophy from the 1925 West Virginia Amateur Championship, the second of his two titles there, a Gorham silver trophy from his 1927 Ohio Amateur victory and medals from additional Ohio Open wins. From his professional career, Shute’s display will feature contestant badges from 1921 through the 1940s, including major championships and U.S. Amateurs; his Ryder Cup plaque noting participation on the 1931, 1933 and 1937 U.S. teams and his personal 1937 Ryder Cup program autographed by the U.S. Team. Also on display will be Shute’s plaque from the PGA of America representing his back-to-back PGA Championship wins in 1936 and 1937.

Among the many personal items on display in Wind’s exhibit will be original pencil sketches by Anthony Ravielli for the cover of the book Wind wrote with Ben Hogan, “Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf,” a 1956 publisher’s leather-bound presentation copy of “The Story of American Golf” and a brass paperweight holding his personal business cards. Also included will be a letter from Bobby Jones discussing details of the 1968 and 1970 Open Championships, personally inscribed books from Arnold Palmer and Gene Sarazen and a copy of the April 21, 1958 Sports Illustrated where Wind coined the term “Amen Corner”. Two clubs of Wind’s also will be exhibited: a vintage hickory shafted Laurie Auchterlonie putter and a Walter Hagen 2-wood.

Wood’s exhibition will include several clubs he used in winning the 1941 U.S. Open, as well as his Masters Tournament cigarette box commemorating his 1941 Masters and U.S. Open victories, as well as his 1935 second-place finish to Gene Sarazen. A selection of rare Wood photographs and some of his medals also will be showcased.

The 2008 Inductee Exhibits will be on display in the World Golf Hall of Fame’s Shell Hall through October 2009. Artifacts from each of the inductees also will be on view in their respective lockers in the Hall’s Member Locker Room. Please note the Hall of Fame will be closed to the general public Induction Day, Monday, Nov. 10. The museum will resume normal business hours Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Amelia Island in Top 10 North American islands

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (October 17, 2008) – Amelia Island, Florida received three top rankings in the recent Conde Nast Traveler’s 2008 Readers’ Choice Awards. The destination was named among the Top 10 North American islands for the second consecutive year, finishing in the #6 spot ahead of Hilton Head, S.C. and Sanibel, Fla. The Elizabeth Pointe Lodge, a 25-room, oceanfront boutique hotel, held the #2 position in the rankings for Top Hotels in the US. The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, a 444-room beachfront resort, was also named #15 among Top U.S. Mainland Resorts, up from its #21 ranking in 2007.

“We’re thrilled to see Amelia Island so well represented again in the Readers’ Choice Awards,” said Gil Langley, President of the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau. “This kind of recognition from such discriminating travelers speaks volumes about Amelia Island’s enduring appeal and the commitment of the island’s tourism partners.”

Readers in the survey evaluated their favorite island destinations on activities, atmosphere/ambience, beaches, friendliness, lodging, restaurants, and scenery. Out of a possible 100 points, Amelia Island scored a 71.6, making it the highest ranked island in Florida. The top hotels category rated properties based on food/dining, location, overall design, rooms and service, while the resorts category also focused on activities and facilities as well.

The awards are based on the results of the Readers’ Choice Survey, in which more than 32,000 travelers voted this year. Winners were announced on October 15 in New York and will be published in the November issue, available on newsstands starting October 21.

MOCA Jacksonville Partners with Jacksonville Film Festival

Jacksonville, Fla.-(October 20, 2008)- The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville is announcing their partnership with the Jacksonville Film Festival to give Northeast Florida residents the opportunity to see award-winning independent and foreign films from national film festivals. The film series will begin on October 23, 2008 and will run every Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. through December 4th at the Museum of Contemporary Art located at 333 N Laura Street, Jacksonville, FL 32202.

Without the Jacksonville Film Festival’s partnering with MOCA, these films would not otherwise be viewed by Jacksonville residents. The films are selected on the basis of outstanding artistic merit and multi-cultural perspective. Click here for the MOCA Film Series Schedule

The Jacksonville Film Festival is extremely excited about this partnership with MOCA. “It gives both of our organizations the opportunity to offer new and innovative films beyond the festival, and an alternative to what is being offered at the Cineplex’s. We are looking forward to continued opportunities to collaborate to have a more regular presence in the community for this kind of vibrant programming,” said Jesse Rodriguez, Executive Director/Program Director of the Jacksonville Film Festival.

This fall’s film series will also include special guest visits from Directors Andrew Silver and John Putch. Silver will appear at the October 30th viewing of Radio Cape Cod and Putch will appear at the November 6th viewing of Mojave Phone Booth.

Silver directed Radio Cape Cod, completed in 2008, and is a producer and director with extensive experience in nurturing performance and creativity. His education includes Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from MIT and a Doctorate from Harvard Business School. Radio Cape Cod is an energized, award-winning love story set on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Putch, Director of Mojave Phone Booth, is an accomplished actor and director. Putch began his professional career as an actor at the age of five in a summer theatre run by his father. He has had a respectable television and film career since then and now directs. He has most recently been directing for the hit ABC television show UGLY BETTY. Mojave Phone Booth is a film about an abandoned phone booth that sits in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It is riddled with bullet holes, graffiti and its windows are broken but otherwise works. Its identity was born on the Internet, and for years travelers would make the trek down a lonely dirt road and camp next to the booth, in the hopes it might suddenly ring, and they could connect with a stranger on the other end of the line.

Film, much like photography, has grown into a vital contemporary art form in its own right, reflecting the art of our times, and provoking thoughtful discussion on many issues and subjects in our society. “By merging the expertise of the Jacksonville Film Festival and MOCA in identifying artful films, we are able to bring to Jacksonville the best films not playing in your local theater,” said MOCA Director Debbie Broder.

The Opening Night Film, THE END, was The Jacksonville Film Festival’s Urban Flat’s Documentary Audience Choice winner. It is a MUST SEE!

Directed by Nicola Collins, it has been winning awards all over the world and has just recently been released theatrically in England. The End is a never-before-told story of a group of men with a common bond. All born into poverty in the east end of London, striving for a better life and all that is found is a life in crime. Unashamed and unapologetic these men live their lives defined by a code of honor. The End, filmed in a cutting-edge style, reveals a bloody history and the confessions of the cockney gangster.

Other films playing during this series include: North Starr directed by Matthew Stanton, Remarkable Power directed by Brandon Beckner, Trail of Tears: Cherokee Legacy directed by Chip Richie and Cracker: The Last Cowboys of Florida directed by Victor Milt.

Café Nola will be open and accepting dinner reservations before each movie, while the MOCA Galleries will remain open until 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $6 for members and $8 for non-members.
