James Island County Park Nov-Dec Hours

During November and December, James Island County Park will close to
all incoming visitors at 4:30pm. Guests must exit the park by 5pm.

Normal sunrise-to-sunset privileges are not available to Pass holders
at James Island County Park in November and December so staff may
prepare for the Holiday Festival of Lights.

All parks and
facilities (except the Campground & Holiday Festival of Lights)
will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day,
and New Year’s Day.

Charleston Climbs Higher in the Rankings Among Top American Travel Destinations

Charleston, SC — For the fifteenth consecutive year, readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine honored Charleston as a Top 10 travel destination in the U.S. Charleston was honored with a # 3 slot. Only San Francisco and New York City ranked higher. Last year, Charleston ranked # 5 in the poll.

According to Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley, “This honor supports our status as one of the greatest destinations in the nation, and it ‘ s of even greater importance because the ranking is decided by a travel-savvy readership. For Condé Nast Traveler to bestow this award upon Charleston means readers have experienced our unique blend of history, charm, attractions, nightlife and fabulous dining and they recognize that what we have here is special.”

Nearby, Kiawah Island, home to The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, received the # 2 ranking for being among the best islands in North America. The Sanctuary received two additional honors – # 5 Resort and # 60 in The Best of The Best category.

Folly Beach Fishing Pier Closed – Charleston, S.C

The Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Fishing Pier is closed for extensive renovations anticipated to be complete early March 2008. After serving around 2,700,000 visitors over the past eight years, the Folly Beach Fishing Pier facilities are scheduled to receive a facelift. Included in the extensive renovations are the pier railings, windows, building
exterior, gift shop facility, and public restrooms. For the safety of the pier patrons, the entire fishing pier, Gangplank Gift Shop, and Locklear’s Beach City Grill will be closed until construction is complete. Holiday Festival of Lights Gingerbread House Competition – James Island, S.C.

Get out your cooking utensils because it’s time for the annual Gingerbread House Competition! This competition is held in conjunction with the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park. The contest is free & open to both youth & adults. Contestants make traditional edible creations that are judged for overall appearance, creativity, difficulty, & craftsmanship. Prizes are awarded & the top three entries in each division will be displayed in Santa’s Sweet Shoppe during the entire Holiday Festival of Lights. Parental involvement should be limited to items pertaining to safety. Award Ceremony will take place at the Park Center on Nov 9 at 6:30pm. Everyone must be pre-registered.
