The Sharks are on the move at South Carolina Aquarium

June 5, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

We just received news that two sandbar sharks at the South Carolina Aquarium are moving out. The sharks were probably not unhappy with the accommodations; we suspect the decision came from above. What we found out is that actually the sharks have been donated to Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, so there is nothing fishy going on.

The donation will make it possible for four sandbar sharks to move out in the spotlight to the Great Ocean Tank exhibit. These poor souls are currently residing in the less popular behind-the-scenes holding tanks. Besides it will also give the South Carolina Aquarium the chance to feature hammerhead sharks.

Right now, there is no set date for the addition of hammerhead sharks.
Aquarium staff members are currently looking for hammerheads. The Aquarium is permitted to collect four hammerhead sharks for the Great Ocean Tank.
Currently there are eight sharks in the Aquarium’s Great Ocean Tank exhibit, three sandbar sharks, three sandtiger sharks and two nurse sharks.

“Opportunities to showcase new animals are exciting,” says Senior Dive Safety Officer, Arnold Postell. “We are hopeful to collect hammerhead sharks in the next few weeks. After a quarantine period, the species would then be featured in the Great Ocean Tank.”

The sandbar shark, Charcharhinus plumbeus, is one of the most common species of shark found in South Carolina.

Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival 2009

June 3, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

Celebrate Gullah Geechee heritage and culture at the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival.
This is the largest showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry. Local basket makers will show their skillful creation alongside unique handmade quilts, paintings and crafts.
But this festival offers a lot more than arts and crafts. You can also enjoy a variety of Gullah Geechee performances such as gospel groups, storytelling, folklore, music and dance by local entertainers.
This festival has a lot of fun activities for kids as well with jump castles, water slides, face painting, and a variety of children’s arts and craft. Don’t worry about going hungry. There will be plenty of delicious Lowcountry foods and specialties provided by local restaurants and food vendors.

Two local documentaries; Bin Yah, There’s no Place Like Home and Grass Roots: The Enduring Arts of the Lowcountry, will be shown at intervals throughout the festival.

The Fifth Annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will take place at Laing Middle School at 2213 Highway 17 on Friday June 5th from 3 to 8 PM and Saturday June 6th from 12 to 8 PM.
The annual Sweetgrass Festival is sponsored by the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association, The Town of Mt. Pleasant, City of Charleston Piccolo Spoleto, Wando Community Education Program, The International African American Museum and The Charles Pinckney Historic Site, NPS.

Night at the Museum in Charleston, South Carolina

May 28, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

Ben Stiller is not the only one who can experience “Night at the Museum”. But instead of a battle at the Smithsonian it will be a “battle at Charleston Museum”. On June 5th you can participate in this real life adventure from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm, if you dare.

When lights are out and the museum is empty, no joke, the whole museum comes to life.

Who knows, you might run into a band of pirates, bump into a unit of Revolutionary War soldiers, a Viking, George Washington, or even some wild animals! This event is for brave kids and adults only. We strongly recommend bringing your flash light, since it can come in handy and even double up as a weapon.

Museum curators and staff will share stories about the collections and maybe even entertain you with a tall tale or two. Visitors are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing as your favorite animal or in historical costume. I’ll have to remember to tell Joe about that, he loves dress up!

This event is not just for kids – big-kids-at-heart are welcome! Reservations required – register online or call 722-2996 x264.
Members – $10/adult, $5/child. Non-members – $20/adult, $10/child

Break It Down Block Party – Charleston, SC

May 28, 2009 by Susanne Talentino

In Charleston the Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto take over town this time of year. If you’re looking to expand your horizons and try something new and different, we have found an interesting event.

The Break It Down block party in Charleston is part of Piccolo Spoleto and sounds like a fun event. The block party is put together by the talented interns at the Office of Cultural Affairs. You’ll get to enjoy an 80’s cover band, and break dancers performing to today’s music. The event will take you from the music style of the 80’s to today and highlight our environmental progress at the same time. Sounds interesting. You encouraged to step out on the green carpet in your best 80’s or 90’s garb or simply wear an outfit created of recycled material to fit the theme. If that doesn’t sound like you, just go and watch – it’ll be a blast!

The event takes place at the US Custom House on Concord & Markets Streets in Downtown Charleston on Saturday May 30 from 7.00 pm to 11 p.m. For more information visit www.piccolospoleto.com
