Come enjoy some toddler time with your child (ages 3 to 5) as we read a story and make a Father’s Day craft for Dads! June 12, 2008 from  10 a.m. – 12 Noon

Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival – Mount Pleasant, SC

The highly anticipated Sweetgrass Festival will celebrate the rich Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage and provides the most extensive showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry area.

This year’s event features an assortment of unique handmade arts, crafts and paintings, live performances, and the preview of a new video documentary about sweetgrass basketry. Festival-goers will enjoy two days filled with entertainment that includes gospel songs and praise dance, storytelling and Gullah/Geechee skits, basket-making demonstrations and the Adande African Drummers and Dancers. Visitors will be treated to a variety of authentic Gullah cuisine, classic barbecue, fish, chicken and beverages offered for sale by more than 15 Lowcountry restaurants and food vendors. Children and adults will enjoy family-friendly activities that include clowns, face painting, magical tricks and a disappearing act performed by Houdini the magician.

Yo Art Project at the Library – Charleston, SC

The Palmetto Project presents an exhibition of photo works and posters by kids ages 6 – 15 from the Meeting Street Manor and Bridgeview Public Housing Residence. These photos and posters illustrate the children’s individual creativity as well as their insight into their community. There will be a reception Sunday, May 18 from 3 – 5 p.m. with refreshments and a multimedia presentation. The Yo Art Project is a facet of Palmetto Project programs and is presented in partnership with the City of Charleston Housing Authority, the Charleston Recreation Department, the City of Charleston’s Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Charleston County Main Library.
