Pro Beach Volley Ball – Charleston, S.C.

The AVP Charleston Open, South Carolina’s only professional beach volleyball event and Charleston’s largest beach party of the year, returns May 15th – 18th, 2008 to the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island. Over 150 top players, including a host of US Olympic gold medalists and the biggest superstars of the game, will battle for a total purse of $200,000 in men’s and women’s competition. Weekend ticket packages and individual session tickets will be available for sale beginning March 1st, 2008.

Once again, the Family Circle Tennis Center will be transformed into beachfront property as over 1,500 tons of pristine white PGA Bunker quality sand will be trucked in to create five world-class volleyball courts spread out over the 32-acre facility, and an intimate center court inside Family Circle Magazine Stadium. This beautifully designed award-winning tennis facility will be become a volleyball paradise showcasing the premier matches and off-court activities throughout the four-day event.

2nd Annual Laurel Hill Family Fun Run/Walk – Charleston, S.C.

The Second Annual Laurel Hill Primary PTA Family Fun Run/Walk is gearing up for a day of running, health fairs, kids’ fun and partnership with the Special Olympics. The one-mile fun run and walk will kick off on Saturday, May 10, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. in the Park West subdivision. The race is set to be lead by fitness guru T-Bone and team members of the Special Olympics. “While the race is organized by the Laurel Hill Primary School PTA, we are hoping that kids and parents from all over the area will participate,” says E.C. Setser, Laurel Hill PTA President.

Hands-on Rice Planting at Middleton Place – Charleston, S.C.

Join a costumed interpreter as he describes how Carolina Gold rice was planted on Low
Country plantations, and learn about the African origins of rice and its cultivation in South Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries. Participants, if they desire, may get down and dirty in the demonstration rice field and assist with the planting! You will learn how a snake moves, smells, hears, and other senses. Learn how to identify a venomous snake, the safe way! Answer all these questions and more as well as the opportunity for a hands-on snake experience under the supervision of our naturalist.
