STIX n’ STONZ will challenge one of societies oldest school yard chants, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.†While one cannot only be physically brutalized, the power given to a single word can emotionally abuse, dehumanize, socially stigmatize and divide a nation. STIX n’ STONZ, will focus on those words that have the ability to oppress, silence and invoke such strength of emotions that the phrase, “…words will never hurt,†does not ring true. Artists will be challenged to visually define words often used to do just that to the LGBT community and their allies. Some artists may choose to embrace a word and put an empowering spin on it.
