Homegrown Concert with Hootie and the Blowfish

Two-time Grammy award-winning Hootie & the Blowfish will return for their annual Homegrown Concert event at Family Circle Magazine Stadium on Friday, August 15th, 2008. The concert series encourages fans to bring school supplies to the show as a donation, and all supplies are donated to local schools in need. The campaign has been so successful that Hootie & the Blowfish have decided to base their entire tour on giving back to economically disadvantaged schools in each community they visit and will conclude their 24-city Homegrown Tour in the city where it all began.

Charleston Museum Family Activities at Freshfields Village, SC

Thursdays are Family Fiesta night at Freshfields. Freshfields is located at the crossroads of Kiawah, Seabrook, and Johns’ Island. Free and open to the public.

High Flying Fun on July 10 at 4-7 p.m.
Hear the history of Frisbees and boomerangs and decorate your own to participate in some high flying fun.

Island Creatures on July 24 at 4-7 p.m.
Did you know the shells you find on the beach are all remains of animals? Observe sea-life specimens from the collection of the Charleston Museum and create your own jellyfish to take home.

Summer Wine Strolls – Every Wednesday at Middleton Place.

What better way to spend a summer evening than strolling through the beautiful Middleton Place gardens with a glass of wine! The Summer Wine Strolls continue every Wednesday, 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Enjoy wine tasting in the gardens, paired with a variety of cheeses. Two convenient tasting tables are available each week in a different garden location. Tastings are $10 per person

Poster Competition for Charleston Food and Wine Festival

The BB&T Charleston Food + Wine Festival, scheduled for March 5-8, 2009 is proud to once again partner with Charleston magazine to present the third annual Official Poster Competition. Artists who are 18 years or older and residents of the Tri-county area (Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester) may submit original works of art for consideration in the design contest of the 2009 Festival Poster. Artists’ designs should illustrate Charleston’s unique culinary culture and flourishing food scene, while exhibiting characteristics that would appropriately represent the Festival. Keeping with the theme of the past two years, artists are required to incorporate into the design the signature wine stain (available with the application).

DREAMfest, Third Thursdays Downtown – Summerville, SC

DREAMfest is a gathering of exhibits, entertainment, refreshments and featured artists in downtown Summerville on third Thursdays each month from May to September, 5 to 8 p.m. Teaming with Art Central, the gallery will host an Art Walk each month on Short Central. Concerts will take place on Hutchinson Square. Shops and restaurants will be open later and community organizations will be encouraged to have booths around the downtown district.

This week’s concert features the Ann Caldwell Quartet on Thursday, July 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Bring a beach blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy! Ann Caldwell is known in the Lowcountry as the “first lady of jazz.” Working full time as a jazz performer, her credits include performances for Piccolo Spoleto and as a featured vocalist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and the Gospel Choir with the CSO.
