The Players Championship

THE PLAYERS Championship – May 6 – 11, 2014.

The creation of TPC Sawgrass as host to THE PLAYERS was based on several unique concepts: First, it would be the permanent home of THE PLAYERS, and it would be owned by the player. Second, the course and surrounding areas would be built with spectators in mind. It would be the first true “Stadium Course,” designed and built to improve the overall on-site fan experience. Third, the TPC would be a course of great design and character that would be accessible all all golf fans.

Working with golf course architect Pete Dye, Commissioner Deane Beman wanted a course design that would favor no particular player or style of play. To meet this goal, an extensive effort was made to design a balanced golf course. There had to be a selection of short, medium and long holes within the categories of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s. There had to be both right and left doglegs. The course routing was laid out so no two consecutive holes ever played in the same direction. (Click here to view the map!) 

New to THE PLAYERS 2014 is Trucks on 10, a food court featuring six local food trucks; Tacos on 12 with TacoLu; and two new restaurants in an expanded Taste of JAX.  Trucks on 10 will bring fans great-tasting dining options from local, favorite food trucks.  This public venue also offers an open-air, centrally located Michelob ULTRA Mobile Bar, outdoor seating and an upgraded restroom.  Participating food trucks include: Mama’s Food (Argentinian-style cuisine); Baby’s Badass Burgers (gourmet hamburgers); Corner Taco (semi-swanky street food); Gourmet Aviator (Latin-American and Caribbean cuisine); Up In Smoke BBQ (Southern barbecue); and Super Food (new American cuisine).

The Players Championship is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour. The Players offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf ($9.5 million since 2008). The field usually includes the top 50 golfers in the world rankings, but unlike the three majors which are staged in the United States, it does not count as an official event on the European Tour.  While it is not officially considered one of the four major championships, The Players is often considered to be the “fifth major” by critics and players due to its prestige, the iconic TPC at Sawgrass stadium course at which the tournament has been played since 1982, and its considerably larger purse in comparison to any other PGA Tour event. In 2014, THE PLAYERS Championship returns to THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass from May 6-11. THE PLAYERS annually combines the best field in golf with the world-class venue that is THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass.  PwC is the exclusive Proud Partners of THE PLAYERS.  Proceeds from THE PLAYERS benefit Northeast Florida charities and have totaled nearly $60 million since the event moved to Ponte Vedra Beach in 1977, including a record $7.1 million donation in 2013.  In April 2011, THE PLAYERS announced a new charitable focus, committing to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over the next 10 years.
