The 35th Annual Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival will be held Friday, September 23 – 25, 2011 at Huntington Beach State Park near Murrells Inlet, South Carolina.
This festival is a paradise if you love arts and crafts, because at this event you will find some of the best artisans around. The festival features over 100 artisans from near and far. The Atalaya Arts & Crafts Festival is an event that combines aesthetic beauty against a background of stunning natural beauty.
The name of the festival comes from its unique setting. An Atalaya is a Moorish-style “castle†built in the Great Depression as a winter home and sculpture studio by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The New York philanthropists are also known for the creation of Brookgreen Gardens across U.S. 17 from the oceanfront park. The Atalaya is one of the most unusual buildings in South Carolina with its lush palm–lined courtyard, wrought iron window grills, and Moorish architecture presided over by a watchtower. It’s no surprise that the Atalaya is a designated National Historic Landmark.
Come to the festival and take a look at fine art, quality crafts and enjoy some tasty Lowcountry food, along with the musical offerings of several of the area’s finest musicians.
