Celebrate a Lowcountry tradition at Charleston’s most beloved nighttime holiday event…the Holiday Festival of Lights! With over 2 million shimmering lights, this three-mile driving tour brings more and more light displays year after year with nearly 600 shining displays this year. Beginning November 14, 2008 and continuing through January 4, 2009, gather your family and friends and come capture the magic of the holiday season at James Island County Park.
The Festival of Lights is much more than just a driving tour! Park the car, stretch your legs, and take in the new and exciting attractions custom-designed for holiday cheer. There are many celebrated attractions to be sure to see and do, including:
Stroll through Santa’s Village and see the meticulously crafted holiday sand sculpture constructed by hand with 50-tons of sand. View the sugary structures entered in the gingerbread house competition. Visit the gift shops, Santa’s Attic and Incredible Gift Shoppe, for hand-crafted goodies from local artisans, official 24kt gold collector series ornaments, toy trains, dolls, angelic decorations, and many more stocking stuffers.
Spoil your sweet tooth at Santa’s Sweet Shoppe where the aroma of specialty coffees, cappuccinos, and fresh baked temptations of fudge and Christmas cookies fill the air. Make a s’more by the marshmallow roasting pit, take a snapshot with Santa, and then hop aboard a train for an up-close look at the displays.
Wander over to Winter Wonderland where a traditional 18-animal carousel ride whirls you around and around. Don’t miss the 4-by-8 foot holiday card designs created by local school students as part of a holiday art competition. These life-size displays of Christmas themes tower above you and are well worth a visit.
And join us on Friday, November 14 for the Opening Night Celebration! Activities include a tree lighting ceremony, the announcement of the postcard and gingerbread competition winners, performances by Lowcountry Power Brass and Charleston Dance Center, and loads of fun for the entire family! These activities are free with your regular Holiday Festival of Lights admission.
Festival Hours are: Fridays and Saturdays: 5:30 p.m. – 11 p.m.; and Sundays – Thursdays: 5:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. Fees are $10 per vehicle for 1-15 guests, $25 per vehicle for 16-30 guests, or $100 per vehicle for 31 or more guests. Holiday Champagne Dinner at Salt
At 6 p.m. on Friday, December 12, join Chef de Cuisine Richard Gras for a signature wine dinner at Salt, the island’s only AAA five diamond restaurant. A truly fantastic and fascinating dining experience, the dinner will feature wine experts who will discuss each wine’s unique characteristics and to answer questions. Served with a seven-course tasting menu designed to complement the featured vintage, the dinners are as entertaining as they are exquisite. The featured winery for the dinner is Veuve Clicquot. Fernandina Beach Lighted Christmas Boat Parade
The 1st Annual Fernandina Beach Lighted Christmas Boat Parade will be held on Saturday evening, December 13, 2008 at the Water Front Marina at the foot of Centre and Ash Streets in downtown Fernandina Beach. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., spectators are invited to bring their chairs to view the lighted parade from along the beautiful waterfront walkway. All boats will be decorated with lights in a Christmas/Holiday theme. Applications will be available online at www.downtownfernandina.com after October 1, 2008. New Years Eve party at the Falcon’s Nest
Toast the New Year at Falcon’s Nest at Amelia Island Plantation. The evening includes dancing to a live DJ starting at 10 p.m., party favors, and a champagne toast at midnight. It’s the perfect way to ring in the New Year, island-style. Space is limited to the first 150 people, and a cover charge will be required. Lace up your skates and head over to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to enjoy a Winter Wonderland! Winter Wonderland is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The ice skating rink is only $8 (skate rental is $2). Sleigh rides take place from 6-10 p.m. (adults $10, $4 for children). This winter extravaganza includes a 100 foot Ice Slide, winter games, an Elf village, onstage performances of the Quiltmaker’s Gift, lighted nature trails, Santa, s’mores on an open fire and much more. On November 20, The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island will celebrate the arrival of the 2008 Beaujolais Nouveau with a lavish fete in the Ritz-Carlton ballroom. Looking for a new cookie recipe? Let Fernandina’s “pro” bakers share a recipe and a taste of their signature baked goods during the annual Holiday Cookie Tour. Enjoy a holiday treat and a walk through the common area of seven of Amelia’s beautiful inn’s, all decked out in holiday attire covering Thanksgiving through Christmas. Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Character Dinner
At 5:30 p.m., the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island will hold their Annual Christmas Tree Lighting, complete with refreshments, music and, of course, a visit from Santa. The City of Fernandina Beach and Historic Fernandina Business Association will host the official City of Fernandina Beach Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. Held in front of the old train depot at the foot of Centre Street, Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive early, at 3 p.m., to meet and be available to take pictures with the kids of the community. Music by area choirs and bands will also take place in the downtown business district from 3 to 6 p.m. at various locations.
