MOJA Arts Festival in Charleston, SC 2009

It’s time again for the annual MOJA Arts Festival in Charleston. This is a celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts. Nearly half of MOJA’s events are admission-free and the remainder are offered at very modest ticket prices. The upcoming festival is scheduled for September 24 – October 4, 2009.

The MOJA Arts Festival includes visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B music, storytelling, theatre, children’s activities, traditional crafts, ethnic food, and much, much more. In addition of a wide variety of presentations, MOJA also includes an educational outreach programs in the public schools and senior outreach in senior citizen homes.

Wednesday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Sept. 27
•THEATRE – One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show, written by Don Evans, is Art Forms & Theatre Concepts, Inc. offering for this year’s festival. Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain Street. •“AN EVENING OF JAZZ UNDER THE STARS WITH LALAH HATHAWAY” National recording artist, LALAH HATHAWAY performs under the stars in a familiar romantic cabaret setting. The evening also features two of Charleston’s favorite artists–the Charlton Singleton Group and opening the evening with his usual dynamic performance style, violinist Daniel Davis. •A CLASSICAL ENCOUNTER – Duo recital by cellist, Kenneth Law, Professor of Cello at Converse College, Spartanburg, SC and pianist Stephen Buck performing works by  Faure, Piazzolla and Rubinstein, classical composers. Sunday, Sept. 27
•GOSPEL CONCERT – “A Back Home Gospel Hour” – MOJA presents Gospel Divas, Lynn-Marie Boone, Joy Pryor, and Gwendolyn Rodgers and the Men of Gospel, Rev. Randolph Miller, Anthony Burke and Mario Desassure in an old fashioned Back Home Gospel Hour. Joining the ensemble is Javetta Campbell with a special appearance by Minister Herbert Beard. Friday, Oct. 2
•DANCE – Ballethnic Dance Company from Atlanta, GA returns to MOJA to bring the magic of dance to the stage. Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street. Admission: $15.00. 7:30pm.

•R&B CONCERT – The MEHD Group presents the international recording artist, THE O’JAYS performing live on stage at the Family Circle Tennis Center.

Fiesta Latina, 2009 – Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is turning up the heat when Fiesta Latina returns to Rousakis Plaza on Saturday June 20th.
Many of the 20 different countries that make up Latin America are represented at this event. First and foremost, there will be lots of music. Live DJ’s and bands will bring salsa, merengüe, cumbia, norteño, bachata, reggaetón and more to the river front. Featured artists include the popular “Serenata Band” from Atlanta, who visited last year, as well as many other local and regional artists. Besides music and dance, the festival also offers arts, crafts and food from different countries.

Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival 2009

Celebrate Gullah Geechee heritage and culture at the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival.
This is the largest showcase of sweetgrass baskets in the Lowcountry. Local basket makers will show their skillful creation alongside unique handmade quilts, paintings and crafts.
But this festival offers a lot more than arts and crafts. You can also enjoy a variety of Gullah Geechee performances such as gospel groups, storytelling, folklore, music and dance by local entertainers.
This festival has a lot of fun activities for kids as well with jump castles, water slides, face painting, and a variety of children’s arts and craft. Don’t worry about going hungry. There will be plenty of delicious Lowcountry foods and specialties provided by local restaurants and food vendors.

Two local documentaries; Bin Yah, There’s no Place Like Home and Grass Roots: The Enduring Arts of the Lowcountry, will be shown at intervals throughout the festival.

The Fifth Annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will take place at Laing Middle School at 2213 Highway 17 on Friday June 5th from 3 to 8 PM and Saturday June 6th from 12 to 8 PM.
The annual Sweetgrass Festival is sponsored by the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association, The Town of Mt. Pleasant, City of Charleston Piccolo Spoleto, Wando Community Education Program, The International African American Museum and The Charles Pinckney Historic Site, NPS.

37th Annual Flowertown Festival – Summerville, SC

This is one of the most popular yearly spring festivals in South Carolina, and it’s definitely one of the biggest events in Summerville. The Flowertown Festival offers a little bit for everyone, from arts and crafts to great food and fun rides for the kids.

Arts and Crafts
Over 200 artisans from across the country come to the Flowertown Festival to show their skills and sell their art. You’ll find a wide variety of arts and crafts from painting, pottery, glassworking, to woodworking, needlework and much, much more!

2009 Taste of Summerville
You definitely can’t miss this area. Here you can taste some of the best food the Lowcountry has to offer!

Some of the area’s finest restaurants participate in the event. Food in this section of the Festival is purchased with FOOD TICKETS which are available for $1 each.

Children’s Jubilee
This is the kids special area. The Children’s Jubilee is located on S. Main Street. Here you’ll find rides, games, treats and special arts and crafts projects to entertain the young ones.

Arts & Craft Show at MOSH in Jacksonville

Don’t miss MOSH’s First Annual Arts & Crafts Show! Local vendors will set up booths where they will sell hand-crafted, artistic creations and art. For example ceramics, stationary and cards, floral arrangements, glassware, and jewelry. The Museum will also have representatives from the Pampered Chef, Arbonne International, Premier Jewelry and Tupperware. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is included with Museum admission and the “Breakfast with Santa” event cost.
